Or Italy

I'm a bit disappointed because World Cups in Europe tend to become Euro cups, and I hoped there would be some more variety. Oh, well...

Marcus, Belgium got some Dutch help as according to the Belgian tv station VRT football data specialist SciSports analyzed Brazil for them

Given the own goal, Belgium got some Brazilian help too :p

It's the first all European Wold Cup Semi's in history. Bizarre.

it was half just plain unlucky, but also half - wtf the were they thinking? It changed the game and let Belgium believe - I think if that hadn't happened and Brazil played with the same intensity as in the 2nd half, Brazil would have won it.

We aren't nearly as effective as usual when we're trailing, so it took us a while :(

The stats are out of this world though:

Wait, did you guys kick Portugal out? Because in 2006 it was Italy, France, Germany, and Portugal :p

RANN's still getting his knowledge from Fox, clearly.

It's an understandable mistake, I guess, CONMEBOL teams have won almost half of all World Cups (9/20), so I guess it seems that all European semifinals look much less probable than they actually are.

They do tend to happen an awful lot when the tournament takes place in Europe though... And that's weird, because not once in South America did we have Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and Colombia all reaching the semifinals.
SYSTEM-J
Not that weird. Europe has a lot more countries than South America. You can't even fill the Copa America with only South American teams.
Lira
We're to blame for that. Spanish speaking colonies all fragmented, and we just couldn't be arsed to declare independence from one another :p

Tim Vickery, whom I mentioned earlier, also mentions that local leagues have become much worse compared to the Premier League or the Bundesliga, for example. Pelé got away with playing for Santos, Neymar left as soon as possible. That means the cup will stay in Europe for, at least, 19 years, as no team from other continent won after we did in 2002.

Tim Vickery,

In regards to that link at the end of the day, it boils down to youth coaching.

The rest of the world just got better development and caught up with Brazil. Kids in Belgium, Spain and Germany have the same distractions if not more than South American kids.

I personally think Africa has infinite potential if they can just get better coaching.

Idk if I buy the domestic league argument either. If domestic leagues were indicators of success, then England would be a lot more successful as a country. France and Belgium would not nearly be as good either.

I'm expecting another horribly tense England game today. We're a team that can't score from open play and Sweden are a team renowned for their defensive organisation and hard work. Unless we suddenly turn on the style and cut them to pieces, this is going to be a war of attrition. Or perhaps they'll turn it on and murder us instead.

Either way, I'm going to keep my insurance policy going. £40 on Sweden to qualify at 7/4. This could be an expensive old World Cup.

Lews
Just got 2/1 on Sweden right now. This game is going to be rough on my nerves, I know it.
SYSTEM-J
Who's offering 2/1? Some local bookie? Or is that inside 90 minutes? All the big boys are only offering 7/4 at best to qualify, and you should always bet on qualification.
