he totaled more saves (84) than he allowed hits (71)
Strikeout-to-hit ratio: 207 whiffs, 71 hits
Gagne faced the minimum number of hitters in nearly half of his 84 saves
Gagne allowed one hit or none in 92 percent of his saves (77 of 84) and gave up zero hits in an amazing 60 percent of them (50 of 84)
Gagne this year:
k's per 9 - 12.50
k/bb ratio - 50/9
batting avg against - .165
walks/hits per inning - 0.83
Mariano this year:
k's per 9 - 7.56
k/bb ratio - 35/14
batting avg against - .205
walks/hits per inning - 1.08
so... if we go by the secondary stats, gagne is better than mo in every category. but not just better, MUCH better. mo did surprise me this year and i thought he was finally becoming mortal. but that isnt the case. however, all those secondary numbers by gagne are what mo USED to do. so i'd say, right now... gagne is the best closer in baseball.
and im not doing this to be ANTI yankee. i mean, of course mo is an awesome closer. i dont deny that. and 2, 3, 4 years ago, he was the best. but gagne has taken over. i mean... who's the best starter in baseball now? its not pedro anymore. right now, it's probably jason schmidt. but 3, 4, 5 years ago, there was NO ONE touching pedro. even you, the die hard yankee fan, can admit that. so what i'm saying is, give credit where credit's due. mo WAS the best. gagne IS the best. |

| shamus, it's good to live in the now, but to live in it so much that you forget the others who contribute and HAVE contributed...with that said, i like to see gagne in the same situations mo has been in already and succeed with the rate mo has, then we'll talk about being the best. he's had a great streak for a over a season and half, yes, but that doesnt mean he's the best. and forget schmidt. yeah, he's having a good year, but i wouldnt call him the best at all. remember when wakefield won 10 staight when he was in pittsburgh? you ever considered him the best pitcher at any time? no? oh, ok...just checking.... |

only time wakefield is the best is when he faces the yanks. :toothless but whatever... you can have your mo. i'm more than content with my gagne.
and only a fool goes by wins. wins mean nothing to me (as in 'pitchers wins'). last year, put pettitte and clemens on the tigers and they're 20 game losers. because they were on the yanks with 6 runs of support per gam, they win 20 games. glavine this year has pitched fabulously. he has a 7 - 6 record to show for it. |

one more thing i just thought of.
suppose the dodgers never make it to the playoffs with gagne. and when he leaves the dodgers, he still never makes the playoffs. but, he continually puts up the numbers that he has been (this is all just for fun). would he still not be as good as mariano because his team never made it to the playoffs? |

| looks like the mets and yankees are doing their best impressions of each other since friday. hopefully this keeps up just long enough for the mets to get a nice cushion in the nl east. i think we have 26 homers in our last 10 games. actually... 27 (?) after cameron's 2nd... that's pretty nuts. i'm not a big fan of the homerun itself, but if it helps the mets to win, whatever. lets go expos and pirates, as well as mets! |

pirates? are you nuts? the only way the pirates are going to have any impact this year is when they trade away their team like they did last year. "hey cubs you need a center fielder/lead off hitter and a third basemen and an extra bat off the bench? well we can give you lofton, ramirez, and simon and dont worry about giving us anything because we enjoy sucking." i cant wait to see what they get for benson when the deal him. my guess is that st. louis will give them a couple kegs of budweiser and a bag of peanuts.
btw gagne is just amazing. |

and this year as well... look at aramis' stats. and i meant 'go pirates' in a 'go pirates beat the damn marlins tonight to make them fall further away from us' kinda way.
and is anyone else simply amazed at adrian beltre's stats this year?
.316/22/56 with a .938 ops
pretty damn awesome. considering he was supposed to be doing this every year, but never did. and HE didn't even get consideration for the Final Vote into the all-star game. this whole all star thing is done so wrong.
and one final all-star game rant. they NEEEEEED to abort this 'this time it counts' crap. because we voted to see bonds in the all star game. we voted to see bonds hit a home run in the all-star game. i GUARANTEE that torre will walk bonds. it's a no-brainer. torre knows his team has a great shot to make it to the WS, so he wants to win. so gay. |

| this is ridiculous. because of injuries to hudson and casey, javier vasquez and paul lo duca are now at the allstar game. UMMMM.... WHY? i have an easier time believing vasquez, but there are already a billion yankees there. why not pick jake westbrook or freddy garcia? as for paul lo duca... wtf?! move 90 feet away from lo duca in LA and you have the BEST candidate in the major leagues... adrian beltre. he's having a breakout season... adding lo duca adds another catcher. i mean... wtf mckeon? the all star game and the way players are selected is so ridiculous. if torre wasnt manager, vasquez would not be there (not that he doesnt deserve to be, and he's still one of my favorite pitchers) but there are other teams with only 1 all star that have a deserving starter. and mckeon... i dont know what he's thinking. this is so retarded. beltre deserved it. hands down. |
