"Intelligence level"? Do you even know what intelligence is? It's more an issue of Tiësto fans being unaware of all the DJs and genres EDM has to offer.

Not really, no.

Seriously; you appear to hate trance DJs in general and think DJs are unskilled. So why do you even come to this web site?

Plus ing one dude. Seriously Ish, are you 12? Cuz that's what your arguement has degenerated to.

I don't know why some of you defend this guy like he's the know-all king of trance knowledge...:conf:

Because Britney Spears can hit number 1 without any talent, why can't he?

Armin is still the Britney Spears of trance though, no matter what he releases he gets his balls tongued by the masses.

Yes it is, Ishkur. See, this is what bothers me more than anything about your rebuttal of my arguments. You treat trance and music in general as a science, or as a sport, that can be analyzed through some sort of absolute and objective values.

This is art, and post-modern art to be more precise. You can deconstruct its values according to your subjective perspective and context, and I respect that. But you insist in portraying yourself as the bearer of the ultimate truth in trance history, and dismiss any other appreciation of the same artistic expression as the product of inferior IQ or brainwashing.

Meanwhile, your actual knowledge of music is fairly limited. You do have an adequate understanding of the historic dialectic of electronic music, but in terms of musical process and theory your grasp and understanding is well below average from a musician's perspective. That's where you're really coming from.

A single raindrop doesn't cause the flood.

So did you actually like PvD, Sasha, Oakenfold and Sven Vath back in 1993? The flood was caused by the introduction of pop aesthetics a few years later, I thought we already established that. Your "trance is all marketing" theory cannot be applied during its early stages, it doesn't make sense.

Gouryella was ing stupid.

WHAT ING PRODUCTION!?!?! The blasted tune was a ing paint-by-numbers trance formula. Groan-inducing. I thought Transa's piss-poor, same-sounding schlock was far more inventive and creative than that drivel, which is funny because it's all the exact same ing song. A computer mad libs program can make trance anthems today. Simply input your random notes, ring out an aolian chord progression, drop the beat at the 96th bar, 32 bar washout, 4 bar snare roll and crescendo. Whoop dee ing doo. Trance anthems can be made in a ing day. Hours, even.

Seriously: what ing production!? Are you mentally retarded, or are you really starting to believe your own bull?

You have an allergy to trance structure so you wouldn't appreciate that track regardless of anything. Groan-inducing to YOU, but booty shaker through Europe and many parts of the world, a track made by faceless artists who were still not riding on their height of DJ superstardom.

You always say that this track is generic and could've been done in a computer mad libs programs, and I admit that most trance anthems today could be done that way, but not Gouryella. Gouryella embodied the teutonic ethos that you abhor so much. Your deconstruction of its structure, while accurate (except in its dismissal of the whole thing as random and generic), could be done in a similar fashion of a late 19th century waltz by Johann Strauss, or an 18th century minuet by J.S. Bach.

Trance[]control had some good ones.

Oh, of course, Trance Control, now I know what you were referring to with mp3.com artists. They sure did have good productions. But those tracks never sounded like Dutch trance to me. Those tracks were fun and all, but these were really much more generic and automated sounding and therefore its style didn't have the impact that the German-Dutch producers did. Their approach to melody lacked the Dutch/Flemish cheese factor that made me, and so many other trance crackers around the world, love a track like, say, Universal Nation so much.

Pretty much. Chaos was so rampant that it got closed down by Guiliani.

Sure I can. Was it free? No? ....not a TAZ.

Do you even know what a TAZ is?

Temporary autonomous zone....didn't know that if you actually paid to get into the party the whole rave philosophy instantly turnted into PLUR. But whatever, you define your philosophy as you wish....

It's a good gauge of how people view the music they listen to. It shows exactly what their intelligence level is, what they value, what they're willing to buy. Ingenius, when you think about it. Market research firms don't get nearly as much useful data out of their surveys.

I use it as a good benchmark on what exactly the standard deviation of electronic music consumption lies. It's also a good source of jokes.

Bull. I listen to pretty much a lot of the music you listen to as well, judging by your other writings. So I guess I'm as smart as you, oh wow. Or probably I have to substract a few IQ points because I learned to appreciate trance as well as all the other I listen to over almost a decade ago? That's enlightening.

There's not much correlation between intelligence and music-listening habits. I know virtuoso violinists that can perform every single Paganini caprice with technical and musical perfection yet they can't express themselves coherently or solve a basic math problem.

Some of the smartest people I know listen to the crappiest music ever such as country or Latin pop ballads.

Sure, it takes a bit of intelligence to really understand what Arnold Schoenberg is actually trying to do with his 12-tone system, but even most smart people will have trouble enjoying it.

quote:
I understand trance more than you will ever ing know, and I don't have to dig into poli-speak musical theory and present it in a deliberately pretentious and obfuscating mental masturbating exercise to do it, to pretend that it's something it's not.

You might get away with that sophomoric bull in your thesis on classical studies, but not here. The more you try to blow smoke up my ass, the more I'll just make you look like a ing idiot.

So please. Try again. Use real examples this time, not piss-flapping intellectual buzzwords that try really hard to pretend to say something. Try using words and concrete instances that actually have a grounding here, in real life.

Everyone understands trance, and any kind of music for that matter, in their own personal and subjective way.

I admit that I might sound pretentious and much of what I'm talking about might be foreign and come off as bull if you don't understand my context, but that's simply the way I appreciate it. My wording might also sound inane but keep in mind that English is not my first language.

Now as someone else said, you have to turned to personal insults that only work to cloud your argument. It's not like I care, but that was uncalled for.

Heh... at least you have the courage to admit it. Far too many 2nd gen trance fans seem to get this impression that their cheese is on a level far superior than other cheese, heck all music in general. I may be a 2 Unlimited fan, but at least I can admit their faults (seriously, guys, would it hurt to come up with a different synth pattern sometimes?) but trance crackers seem to think their music's above criticism when it is probably one of the easiest to stereotype these days. That attitude, above all else, is what irritates many.

I feel like a grilled cheese sandwich right about now.

hah! I was just thinking the same thing about you. You've read a lot of books. You possess much theory and blatherscite. But no understanding.

You're like a guy who has read a how-to book on figure skating, and now believes he's an Olympic figure skater without ever having stepped onto the ice.

*sigh* It's like we're walking through a forest, and I'm explaining how green it is, and you find a red plant on the ground, and you go "SEE! This proves the forest is red."

For once....put down the ing pretentious music theory textbook and look up.

So?

(you constantly bring up classical composers. Why is that? Are you striking for legitimacy? If mentioned in the same breath, that somehow brings forth the claim that trance is intelligent music for highly-evolved people only? .....Measure the music on its own terms, comparing it with its brethren. Comparing trance to classical is like comparing a bicycle to a jet. Sure, they're both useful modes of transportation, depending on if you're going to Japan or the supermarket. But just the same, its a fairly useless comparison).

Wait wait wait wait....so you're calling trance[]control generic, but Gouryella not.

The mind. It boggles.

This reads like a whiny teenager to his dad over playing his noisy music late at night. "You just don't get it, man. You're not WITH IT."

Yes, pull out the "This music is only for people in the super secret club. Members only!", cultural aesthetic card again.

What a coincidence, I know music theory blowhards on internet message forums who can wax pathetic about intellectually bankrupt minor-key melody central european music like its a gift from God himself, yet can't seem to accept music for what it really is, which is the simplest form of enjoyment.

But that's not music written for enjoyment, that's music written for the purpose of intellectual masturbation and for the experience of new forms.

Penderecki's Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima is one of the most beautiful compositions I've ever heard.

I do understand your words and your context. All too well, I understand how much of it is actually sophomoric crap. How else do you think I was so easily able to emulate your style? You are not saying ANYTHING of any substance at all. I despised that kind of writing when I first encountered it back in school, and I still despise it, and I keep a copy of Orwell's "Politics and the English Language" right here on my desk to remind myself not to divulge into that territory when writing something heavy-handed.

If you have something to say, say it with intent, purpose, and clarity. Resist the temptation to sink into flowery, obfuscating prose in an attempt to make it sound intelligent and beyond reproach. You are not impressing anyone when you write vague words with cloudy meanings. More times than not, the exact opposite result is achieved.

All the more reason to keep it simple, stupid.

Use regular, clear language. Okay, go.

The amount of swearing I do is directly proportional to how many times the other side just doesn't get it despite my explaining it again and again and again. I hate repeating myself. The first time I say something, I'll never berate, belittle or antagonize. Subsequent times, after it appears that people don't get it (for whatever reason), that's where the belligerence takes over. I don't have time to lead you by the hand through this. Either smarten up or go away.

How exactly was Gouryella marketed, then?
Ishkur
It came out two months after Out of the Blue.

heh.

I thought it sounded familiar.

Guess my next question.
