Agreed. Blind followers are a big problem.
That Tiesto has no negative (worded: constructive by his manager) criticism of his sets - means he has no way to gauge just how bad it has become recently.
On average about a 1/3 of his sets are his own productions these days. I didn't mind that being so back in 1999 when the productions were actually decent. Nowadays i go and support this artist because its just something i've always done... and old habits die hard.
Also - if you have the PATIENCE to suffer hearing Adagio screeching into your ear drums AGAIN... then you might just hear the 2-3 gems in each set - maybe not mixed in accurately... but still tunes you wouldn't get to find out about except through Tijs.
quick poll - who knows the ID Egyptian Melody track he is dropping right now?
Exactly - if you didn't attend his set - you wouldnt.
So even though he is hated by the majority i'll always go back for more cos its where i can find the music best suited to me. |

To be fair, yes crowd interaction is a part of every entertainer, from theatre to poetry to music and sports and beyond. Is it something to be in awe of? No. Because everyone can do it, and everyone does it. Come on. Why are you applauding a guy's ability to accept praise and compliments from you? ....that's not skill. That's, like.....thinking you're the awesomest because your dog wags his tail when he sees you.
So. ing. What. You want to impress me, Tiesto, go up to the edge of the stage and punch a guy in the face. Ha ha ha. That would be cool.

Oh, I don't actually hate Tiesto. I just don't think he's very good. I don't want him to go away, after all. Where else would I get material?

I like to hear emotional tunes where the electronic sounds do the talking and I can feel it in me. Until 2000 I could find these in dj mixes BUT only one or two awesome tunes per mix and I basically found them in all edm genres. When you're at a party the tracks don't really have to be stormer after stormer since the flow is important too.
When I am at home listening however, I find myself skipping to the parts I like. This is where Tiesto comes in for me. His sets and cd's are for me the best tracks I ever found all compressed together. No more skipping to interesting parts, just put it on and let it go. I found not other DJ that can offer me the same value. So trackselection for me is his strongest point. Also, I found out that a large portion of the awesome tracks were produced by him or coproduced. This is where he earned most of my respect. While after a long search I would still end up with a long list of new and awesome tunes which I could myself mix together, I would certainly never be able to create masterpieces like that.

I saw him when he made the promotional tour for his ISOS thing.
He was horrible perhaphs I was the only person among 7'000 that recognized "Matthew Dekay-Bad". that was sad. |

| u know one cd that really surprised me was Revolution. it's progressive and seemed way diff. from what tiesto was doing. that being said i think it's one of his best, maybe 2 or 3 other cd's i like as well. |

Let me start by saying I agree that I think Tiesto's own stated goal of playing just his own stuff is a horrible horrible idea. But I really have to disagree with you about reading the crowd. Sure Tiesto and other famous DJs don't really have to read the crowd because the crowd already knows what they are going to play and has become a self selected group who is already partial to just about everything in the DJs record bag.
Now look at all the amateur djs out there. Holy crap. I cannot tell you how many times I've heard hard hard techno at 10:15pm. The dance floor is empty. In fact people try to find nooks that put some walls between them and the main speakers. The atmosphere is dead. Bringing people back on the dancefloor takes a lot of work. I've also seen DJs actually try and fail repeatedly before another DJ who reads the crowd better succeeds. This is my opinion from personal experiences from areas that don't host a lot of EDM friendly audiences. |
