Zip is always like that. He's like the Sasha of minimal house. He looks like his mom died right before his set. Completely opposite of guys like Ricardo Villalobos.

But that doesn't mean he's not a good DJ. Zip is in fact probably one of the best minimal house DJs right now.

One of Montreal's best techno DJ, Mateo Murphy, is probably the less enthusiastic DJ ever. I remember back at Aria he would do his sets seated, his shoulder resting on a corner of the booth.

The music was awesome, his selection was crazy, and he has monstruous mixing skills. lol

The OP is a poor version of a troll. He has failed to demonstrate knowledge towards the subject of his criticism

THIS THREAD SUCKS AND IS NOW ABOUT KITTENS RIDING ROOMBAS !

Not at all.

First, I am talking about 2004 (that DJ is still boring to see, but his music is awesome)

Second, DJing is not supposed to be a show with fireworks, you know.

If only the DJ was hidden, maybe people would pay attention to the music.

Seriously people, stop complaining about "today's music is " and after that asking for a show with strippers and fireworks. That would be why music is , not because of an Ableton set, or a boring DJ

Only what comes out of the speaker is essential

(I exclude here live acts, and shows involving MCs)

i agree that the dj booth should be somewhat more hidden like it used to in the 90s, and the BIG ass stereo and screens and lightnings where in the focus. But the dj should really enjoy it too, he should be part of the crowd dancing, buying drinks, hitting on chicks between the mixes and have a really good time. lol.

Well ok that's fine.

But that's not for me. I prefer a DJ concentrating on mixing, on the music, and on the reaction he gets from the floor.

what we used to ask from DJs is not the same as today.

First, in the early 90's, club DJs did not even have to beatmatch. Nowadays, it's mandatory, it's the basics.

As an example, Robert de la Gauthier was the first DJ to spin techno in Montreal. He could be my father, but the guy doesn't know, to this day, how to beatmatch.

Simply cause that was not what was asked of a DJ back in the days. You had to play good music and make a basic transition between tracks so people would not leave the dancefloor except for buying alcohol.

Second, what you ask from the DJ is not what mixing is nowadays.

Today, we value quick mixing. DJs rarely play the same track for more than 6 minutes.

Only some DJs can pull it off. Ricardo can do it. He is even able to play the same song twice in a set without being redundant.

Radio Slave also pulls off entire tracks.

But nowadays, the standard doesn't have time to go get a drink and hitting on chicks

Long transitions are so underused too. Everytime i mix, i try to do 3 minutes or so transitions. I like smoothness. Sometimes i tend to do my transitions so long that i don't have enough time to beatmatch the next record but i don't care, i just play the damn thing.
