Now that I think about it, I've been bitching about fad genre's since I started going out. In 2000 everyone was playing hard german trance. That got played out. Then it was big room tribal. Then it was electro in 2005. Then minimal in 2007. Who knows what I'll be bitching about next...probably hipster disco
The only really good year I think was 2003 to 2004 |

I think people are getting way too ing caught up with genre tags.
Just take a deep breath, and as nefardec already graciously pointed out, buy and enjoy music you like.

Well, I guess 2009, 2010 should give us some great things, not?
IMO technical progress in the '90 is why we think many things were great or better back then. I think we remember new things better than improvements over years.
People want something new and not just something better.
I think it can be compared what happens with mobile phones for the past years. I bet in 10 years this period will be remembered as the time that many new things happend regarding (smart)phones. |

No I don't like today's trance music and that doesn't invalidate my opinions on this forum. I mentioned Lady Gaga to emphasize the fact that money is no longer a quality filter.
I listen to the stuff I like while always keeping an open mind to different trends (new and old). Liking trance and not liking dubstep is the classical form of narrow mindedness.
Get out of the dirty dead old chest in the attic called trance and open yourself to ongoing trends.
Go to the 20 year anniversary of Warp Records in Sheffields, the party is in August. You'll get my meaning of future music. |

Then you have a pretty ed up meaning of future music. You do realize that Warp hasn't been relevant in years? I mean, it's a pretty sad when Flying Lotus is their main showcase these days. AFX+Hecker set could be interesting though... |

You forgot Hudson Mohawke. The Low End Theory in LA is also very good at pushing boundaries. Mary Anne Hobbs is to be mentioned too.
Warp Records are not doing the same things now, they're now producing movies too. |

Hudson Mohawke at times does sound like an interesting Flying Lotus meets Plone experiment, but I seriously can't see him as any kind of future in EDM. Mary Anne Hobbs just plays other people's music, and I don't know why are you mentioning her, especially since she's not related to Warp in any way.
Warp has a huge roster of talented musicians and even today they are able to release a couple of good albums per year (even if their catalogue is becoming more and more polluted with indie and abstract hip hop), but once upon a time they were setting up the standards (especially with the first wave of IDM around 1993-1999, and in 2001-2005 period), today they are just another record label without a clear vision which is following what everybody else is doing. I just hope that they'll soon come to an end, because it's becoming really painful to look at what was once the most important and influential electronica label going down the toilet like that. |

"Minimal" isn't even that "big" now. There's no real "fad" going on at this point, and as previously mentioned most of the people who were spinning "Minimal" in '05/'06 have moved on, as should Existo22.

And IpLaYWiTLiGhTs you are right. At this point I would take the most tepid paint by numbers big supersaw commercial female vocal trance anthem with a 3 minute breakdown over minimal any day of the week ;) if this would bring the scene back.

I think that your problem ultimately lies in your inability to find artists, parties, venues and promoters that are to your liking. There is plenty of "banging... Detroit" Techno out there. In fact, I've been to three parties with it in the last month, while I can't even remember the last time I was at a party with "gonowhere minimal for 3 hours."
Clearly you're very aware of the artists that you don't like because they put out what you perceive to be Minimal music. Good. Now, the next logical step in the equation would be for you to seek out artists, parties, venues and promoters who do support, promote and book the music that you find to be of quality. Stop going to the parties that you're going to, stop previewing the music of artists that you think suck. Stop bitching, stop expecting things to change. There will be zero change in what you're listening to unless you choose to get up and do something about it. |
