Obese have right to 2 airline seats: Canada court (pg. 10)

You are missing the point that Malek is stating.....there are those that are larger because of medical or genetic reasons and are clearly disabled. Some of the people who are just obese because of lifestyle choice end up benefitting as well from this....just like many others who have become disabled because of lifestyle choices. For example, I know a guy who is permanently in a wheel chair because he decided to get drunk and drive his car into a tree. He gets all the same perks as those who were born without the ability to walk....from peoples logic in here, he should loose all the privledges he has now.

The problem with many people here is they think everyone who is fat is fat because of their lifestyle choices and that is not the case. The majority of people who are obese enough to need two seats are most likely that large not do to lifestyle choices but do to other reasoning.

exactly, imagine if people that ODed, got liver cancer because they drink like morons or get lung cancer because they smoke like chimnees would not be covered by the health system, that would devastate most TAs here:rolleyes:

bigottery at its finest:stongue:

universal health care is forced upon you by the government and therefor is supposed to cover everyone regardless. Airline fees are private and voluntary. No one is forcing you to fly on their plane unlike with healthcare where the government forces you to use their service due to its ban on private service.

Two entirely different issues.

shouldnt they have to pay for treatments more than the person who lives a healthy lifestyle and doesnt use OHIP as much as the chain smoker?

As i said, government health care is forced upon us. If we take your approach, allow people to opt out and take private coverage. Also reduce their taxes by 50% (the cost of health care to our tax dollars). Then we can be selective about who pays what and what gets covered.

same logic could be applied to almost anything else, disabled people get perks (parking, fiscal deduction, rebates, etc.), some were born like that, others got in an accident because they were stupid on the road or elswhere... they get the benefits too, does this mean we have to remove the benefits to all disabled people?

being disabled and being fat are two different stories. Now, if you are disabled BECAUSE you are fat then you should be treated as disabled, NOT fat.

As for my parking example. My brother was disabled all of his life but got progressively worse as time went on. Our family was entitled to a handicapped decal when he was still walking but we declined. We believed even then that only people who REALLY need it should get the permit. When he was bound to a wheelchair, we finally got the decal and it was one of the sadest days of my mother's life.

Enter 2008 with more handicapped parking than you can imagine with people who dont even have a wheelchair lift being allowed to use them. And pregnant and small child parking is EVEN WORSE! I park there on purpose just to make a statement. If you can walk around a mall with kids or as a pregnant person, then you should be able to walk the extra 20 metres to the front door.

Hey if it's cold out and that's one of the few close spots left you bet your ass I'll park in it and waddle into the store with my belly poofed out.

Yeah but the issue here is that the people who take advantage are pretty much being rewarded for it, when instead they should be punished. ing fat s.

The REAL solution to this problem would be, like I said, to throw some Jenny Craig their way. Or offer them gym passes or something. A gym pass is about the same price as a flight, is it not? My idea is brilliant.

I fail to see how it's a reward, seriously, do you consider parents who abused substances and breed retarded or disabled kids being rewarded from all the support the govt is giving them?

What about illetrate people who ditched school but can steal recieve special care from the govts?

I can't understand how in this world people are defending one of the worst industry that treats it's people like cattle and overcharge anything and everything.

I dont agree, sorry rachel. I have had problems with my weight my entire life, and while I am certainly not obese, I am not small either.

But does anyone bother to ask how hard I work at simply maintaining my weight? I work out 4 days a week and eat damn near close to perfect, but cant lose weight due to hypothyroidism. They certainly are not going to ask my lifestyle habits at a ticket window, nor do most people CARE.

I fit into an airplane seat easily, with room to spare, but I should have to pay more than the 120lb bitch that is sitting next to me just because I am bigger? hell no. People see larger people and automatically assume that they are fat, lazy heffers, but they dont bother to ask what they are doing about it. So, back to my original post I say this:

I completely agree with you, and your suggestion is bang on.

Related story.

On our way back from Cuba last year, we were asked if we'd mind changing seats so that a large man could have our two seats for himself.

I guess he fit into the seat but it was very, [i]very[/b] tight and he was highly uncomfortable. He was a couple rows a head of us on the opposite side of the plane.

There were several extras seats on the plane, I guess, but none of them were next to his seat. But we had 1 empty seat beside our two. Thus the stewardess was trying to move ppl around so he could have a spare seat beside him to make his trip more comfortable.

The stewardess was having a hard time finding anyone that would agree to be moved around. We agreed happily, though, as it put us right in front of our new friends we'd made down in Cuba.

Anyways, it was a surprising question (I thought at the time) when we were asked if we'd mind moving to accommodate the large gentleman.

making accomodations for the guy is ok if its voluntary. But to have yet another law forced upon everyone is the part that kills me. The worst part is that its not even a law enacted by elected officials. Again it's unelected court judges that do the dirty work. We are almost a dictatorship of unelected judges at times.

If airlines choose to give 2 seats for the price of one to fatties and want to make it an issue of customer service, then great. But the government and the judges need to butt out for once (pun intended)

:conf:

I thought the point of this is that now the seats are also mandatory. IE if i'm fat, the airline HAS to give me a seat, effectively forcing this business onto the airlines, who then in turn force it onto me?

What do you think would happen if an airline declined a fatty's request for 2 seats? Sued in court, and would lose the battle because of this decision.

Simple solution to the problem.

Allow the 2-seat only if you have a medical note from your doctor saying that you're fat because of your genetics/disease, not by choice.

Who gives a if some fat ass on the plane needs two seats...its the ing jackass in front of me who has his seat reclined all the way back with his head in my ing face that I am really worried about.

If some fat needs two seats why would it bother you? Its not like they are stretching out and lying down to get comfortable. They are in the same seating position you are. They are only wider than you and weigh more. It would be different if they actually had more space in between them and the seats to get comfortable. Every thought of that?

Or what about people who smell like that sit close to you... them too.

not to mention the little snot nose kids....seriously....kids should not be allowed on a plane until they at least 10 years old.
