Well then thats an issue with the airline.

Exactly. I thought that was very obvious and one of the main points of this whole debate.

Most of the costs of a flight are fixed, not variable.
I can see the argument about cost recovery if the flight were full, but in many cases these days, the flights are not full (I believe the average load rate for domestic flights is around 75 - 80%) and it makes little difference to the airline whether a seat sits empty or it is filled with the spillover from one fat person.

It should be.

yeah but who decided that a seat has to be 17 inches wide? Those companies did so to cram more people to squeeze more profit while fully knowing that they'de piss off bigger peple. In the last 30 years people are taller and wider, yet seat width are still the same.

swing of the pendulum anyone?

(i still can't imagine how you people support airlines, they are very bad corporate citizens)

How so? More people/luggage = more fuel, more insurance, more baggage handlers, more attending staff, larger plane.... The amount of resources dedicated to a flight would be directly proportional to the number of people. No?

I don't think this has to do that much with airlines specifically, but more with businesses being able to regulate their own costs/prices and services.

I'm pretty sure fees are pretty much dependant on takeoff slotting fee and fuel. I don't think fuel varies too much based on cargo.

Generally the consumer does, and that drives product development and adaptation.
Not so with airlines. Malek's got a really good point.

Fuel, pilot and stewardess salaries, landing fees and plane maintenance are the bulk of the airlines expenses. They don't vary if the plane is full or not. So essentially she is right. (that's why you see crazy price reduction the day a plane is taking off to have better margins).

actually, scent free work places etc..are very common...i'm not sure how it translates to somewhere like a plane..but i'm unable to even wash my hair with heavily perfumed shampoos and go to work..many of the workshops, conferences etc..that I attend are advertised as scent free...it's just the norm now...

Its crazy. How much society has to change EVERYTHING because of a small minority. And the list of "victims" just keeps on growing.

Labor should be considered a fixed cost for airlines (or more of a step cost, if you want to get specific.) The pilot is paid X dollars whether there is one person on the plane or 100. Add in airport fees, fuel and depreciation on the airplane itself, and you have high fixed costs per flight.
