However, the difference between these body types is not enough to account for morbidly obese people who actually take up two seats. You have to EAT and SIT to get that fat.
Body type determines the "natural" weight for a person. The farther one gets from that point, the more resistance the body puts up. I can gain weight just as easily as other members of my family can lose weight - the trick is keeping it there. In order to drop below, say, 140, I'd have to do more than just starve myself for months; I'd have to be running marathons in addition to several hours of exercise on a normal day. The so-called endomorphs may tend toward 200 or 250 or even 300 pounds and have trouble keeping it below that, but they also have to be completely sedentary and pig out constantly to get much heavier. The simplest exercise like a half-hour walk will burn off far more calories for them, due to their weight, than it would for the rest of us, so if they eat the same amount of food we do, they will lose weight.
Nobody is naturally 600 pounds and takes up two airline seats. Genetics no doubt play a factor - it would be virtually impossible for me to get that heavy - but it is absolutely insane to suggest that there isn't also a significant and easily mutable behavioural element in there. |
Hey I learned about the body types myself, if i never got into working out I'd probably have learned from somebody or maybe not at all. I bet there's alot of people under the age of 20 that don't know the name of the 3 main body types. The people who are obese and have a eating disorder got that way because sitting on your ass is much easier than going out 3-4 times a week and working out for at least 30-45 mins. People in society tend to do things that are easiest because they dont wanna go through the hardships of something. If everyone had the mentality to always want a challenge and not always go for the easier path, we'd have a lot less obese people. |

| I think it's safe to say that the morbidly obese and handicapped don't do very much traveling as it is, and that probably isn't going to change. I don't see why airlines would bother fighting this. I can't see them being over run by really fat people taking up 2 seats now. |

Convenience and comfort cost money. It's a fact of life. You admit yourself that the "disorder" is essentially just laziness, so why would they be entitled to two seats for the price of one?

I wonder if we'll start getting fat s from the U.S. driving into Canada to get cheap flights. That'd be pretty funny. |

| I dunno how much of a victory this is. Do you know how humiliating it will be for obese people to have to specify exactly how fat they are when they are booking their airplane ticket? The whole process of actually getting the second seat has got to be pretty embarrassing. |

for most of them, it's the price they pay for their lifestyle |

| Yeah, well I'm just saying whether you pay for 2 seats or you pay for 1, either way it's going to suck. |

Goddamn I ing hate fat people. Like they really deserve this kind of sensitivity. Yes, let's just validate/enable their sedentary lifestyle by giving them more room. Good ing job.
Instead of the extra seat, why not give them some coupons for Jenny Craig or some ? It's not my fault they can't get off their fat ass and exercise or eat properly. Ugh. |

So if genetics play such a big part why wasn't obesity a huge problem 100 years ago? 50 years ago?

I'm also curious how those obese genes seem to be mostly concentrated in Western countries (Canada, America, Australia mostly)??
This is a crock of and very typical of the Canadian Government.

As if they'd put that much effort into saving a couple of bucks. |
