The law has to be clear on whether or not being obese is a disability....and at this time the courts have not made this crystal clear. If being obese is a disability then the person should be entitled to a seat that is comfortable at no extra charge.....you wouldn't charge others with disabilities extra.

If the courts make it clear that being obese isn't a disability then...imo...the airline shouldn't be forced to provide two seats...however...as a customer service the airline should try and accomadate someone if there is an extra seat available.

edit: IMO being obese is not a disability unless it substantially prevents you from performing normal activities of life.

But the airline law should not work around someone who has a self induced disorder. Alcoholics, drug addicts do not get special treatment in this world. Hell they pay for re-hab if they choose to get help. Why the hell should people who are obese get special treatment. I'm sorry but that would be accepting that into our culture as ok.

and IMO, disorder or not, it's not ok.

They should however pass laws for free treatment... to get help... that would be a more positive route to recognizing their disorder

I would agree that free treatment would be a positive route to go.

As I said....an airline should only have to provide appropriate seating if being obese is clearly considered a disability.

Why should anyone with a disability get special treatment?

Free treatment? Didn't I say that in my very first post?? Psh.

edit: nevermind, I see you meant something different than what I said.

well....you did say coupons....so I don't know if that is exactly the same thing....besides....Jenny Craig is not an ideal way to go.

Goddamn I ing hate fat people. Like they really deserve this kind of sensitivity. Yes, let's just validate/enable their sedentary lifestyle by giving them more room. Good ing job.

Instead of the extra seat, why not give them some coupons for Jenny Craig or some ? It's not my fault they can't get off their fat ass and exercise or eat properly. Ugh.

Well my point was really about empowering obese people to make healthy choices, instead of enabling them to continue being fat.

Of course we are. Most people are.

I'll tell you people something that you might not like. When obese people come into the hospital, they're not coddled and treated like they have a disability. It's pretty well understood by most medical professionals that obesity is a PREVENTABLE disease, so nobody's standing around saying "Oh poor you, you'll get through it", they're saying "It's time to get up off your ass and do something about your health." Nobody who can do anything to help feels sorry for obese people. And you'd be surprised how little sympathy there is.

I don't think that would ever happen.

As Jenny said, medical professional's standpoint is not in agreement.

This goes back to the argument that there are many other self induced disabilities that are accommodated every day. Obesity is no different.
