App Review: Angry Birds (Android)

(This game has ruined many ppl's lives *including mine* on the iPhone. Whatever the cost is, go buy it ... it's really worth it)
What does it take to make an addictive game? Not much -- just throw in some super simple controls, cute graphics, and basic physics. Rovio Mobile's Angry Birds is one such game that includes all these elements, and today the studio's just released a public Android beta to cater those without an iOS or Ovi-enabled device. In case you're not already familiar with the popular title, the backstory is that a gang of hungry pigs snatched away some eggs from the birds, forcing the feathered creatures to embark on a rescue mission for the sake of their survival. The gameplay on the Android version is just as simple as before: in each level you use a fixed slingshot to fling the birds -- one at a time -- into the forts, in order to kill all the pigs inside. As a secondary challenge, you must also attempt to get a three-star rating depending on the amount of structural material you destroy, so the key is to perfect your shooting angle.
At the beginning you're only given one type of bird that does nothing more than just headbutting, but throughout the game you'll come across six more birds, each possessing one special power: multiply, explode, accelerate, dropping egg bombs, boomerang, and extra strength. Don't worry, the instructions are pretty clear when you first meet these enhanced kamikaze birds -- most involve just a single tap anywhere to trigger their special abilities mid-flight. Once you get the hang of it, you'll soon be wanting to try out all sorts of trajectories to take vengeance on those cheeky green hogs. Seriously, the pigs really do laugh at you when your birds miss them.
While we're not familiar with the Ovi Store version of Angry Birds, we've definitely spent a fair amount of time on the iOS flavor. Sadly, since the latter's still running on a low 480 x 320 resolution, the blurred graphics on the notoriously sharp retina display does no justice to the game. On the other hand, the Android version looks a lot prettier on our Nexus One, Dell Streak and HTC Desire, as it runs on their native resolution of 800 x 480. That said, overall the Android beta didn't feel as well-oiled as its iOS counterpart -- we've noticed the occasional light hiccups while panning across the scene, so here's hoping that this will be fixed in the final release. Regardless of this minor flaw, we'd still highly recommend Android users to check out this free Angry Birds beta in the market -- go grab it while it's hot! |

Get a Desire, you won't be disappointed. |
True... I think I'd most prolly for sure take a Desire over my Milestone.
The Sense UI really is bloody brilliant, even if I dont care for the social network integration... the general improvements Sense brings to the interface are fantastic!!
And the HTC keyapd is a good deal better than Moto's.

I prefer Launcher Pro to ADW by a longshot - I find it much faster on the Desire. |
Launcher Pro (or Free) are incredible! Love the widget re-sizing, though apparently you can do that in stock Froyo too.
Never used ADW, but im ing IN LOVE wiht Launcher! Cant imagine using my Android phone now w/o it.

I got Advanced Task Killer but I never use it, I always have almost 200MB RAM free anyway. Froyo is the best thing this phone ever got.
|
I dont use Advanced Task Killer to kill apps to free up memory... pretty much use it to stop battery drain from apps that are staying open in the background... gotta kill that and max ur battery life baby. :D |

| Well I'm not an Android phone owner anymore, back to my Nokia - sold the desire to a dude in the States for $600. How could I say no to that? |

I'm not sure it's a Samsung issue, an Android issue, or combo of both/first gen thing, but my SECOND Galaxy Vibrant crapped out for no reason at all last week. Kept getting android process errors, and phone kept shutting off/restarting by itself every couple of minutes.
So yeah, going in tonight to get a THIRD ing phone. I would love to say that I will never go with this product again if this one craps out as well - but I really want the Android platform, and have always used Samsung phones. :/ |

Oh man, gods that would be so frustrating to deal with... :S
Hope this third one dont up...
And if u want my opinion, get an HTC Android phone... Sense UI is bloody brilliant - NO WORD OF A LIE... it truly is THAT good.
Though I'm guess if ur getting a Vibrant, therfore you must be on Bell, and they only offer the Legend... which would feel like ur getting an Android phone thats already dated compared to whats out there...
HTC Desire = Android's best offering in Canada IMO. |

I can't go back after having already seen/used the Vibrant, lol.
I'm pretty easy going about stuff like this, the only real inconvenience was that it crapped out when I was on my way to Toronto for a couple days. I only had a handful of apps downloaded, so w/e.
The only thing is they made me pay a deposit for the loaner phone and I ING DROPPED it the first day I had it, lmao. Some piece of Nokia. T9 texting ftl!
Anyway, I painted the scratch on the corner and am planning on wearing something titty into the store tonight as a method of distraction. I'll be sure to approach a male associate. Lolololol. |

Though I agree, it wont matter as she must be with Rogers to be picking up the Vibrant, neh?
Both are tight phones though - great choice Jenny!
(And feel ya on the "cant go back" part... :)) |
