I think this might be the last time you will see ARod in a Yankee uniform. Personally, I dont think they need him. I think they should trade A-Rod and Sheffield for a 1B and 3B .300 hitters and a 1B that is a good fielder and stick Giambi in DH. They dont need superstars, they need good hitters and they will get 100 RBIs easy. I just dont understand the mentality behind going after superstars when no matter who you stick in that lineup, as long as they can hit well, they will get RBI's. What was wrong was JOE TORRE managing the team into the ground. How do you take a guy who has been out the whole year and hadn't swung a bat until 2 weeks before the playoffs and A) put him at 1b, a position he's never played before in his life and B) Stick him in the cleanup spot? Then he goes and pitches Jaret Wright in an elimination game and sticks ARod in the 8th slot. I'm a supporter of ARod, and I think he should've been put in the 5 hole all season. It's his comfort spot - check the splits on espn on him there, and you'll see that he becomes a SUPERSTAR there, to the tune of a ~1.200 OPS for his career. Everywhere else, he's ~.900 while on the Yankees. Comfort zones are huge for someone with a mindset as fragile as his. BRING ON LOU. If anyone forgot, Lou was ARod's first manager in the bigs and hopefully can mesh better w/ ARod than he did w/ Torre, who lost confidence in ARod. People don't understand - With Giambi being more and more injury prone, Sheff probably gone, and Matsui being prone to extended power lapses, ARod is going to be THE GUY for us next year... and until he retires. We need him.
I disagree with trading our superstars for "role players". In basketball or football, you can get complimentary players - a 3 point shooter who just shoots 3s when defenses collapse, a fullback who gets the tough 2 yards on the goal line... but in baseball, it's not necessary. Get the best hitters you can, and go to war w/ them. They scored 108 more runs than the Tigers in the regular season and only hit 8 more homeruns than them. The offense was great, it was there. It just goes to prove Billy Beane's point in Moneyball that the playoffs are a crapshoot, due to small sample size. One team will have an advantage over the other, but anything can happen, esp in a 5 game series... which is why I think the first round should be a 7 game series - why give the WC team an advantge? |

The Cards did it with Carpenter. Which I am very happy about. Now we see Weaver in the first game! |

Wang is a beast, he def should've gotten the call... Although w/ the way the Yanks were hitting, it woudln't have made a difference, in hindsight. |

The cards could do it b/c Carpenter was on his normal rest. Had they lost game 4 and went to game 5, he woudln't have been pitching until game 4 of the NLCS. |

Trust me, I had it in my mind that if/when Pinella takes over, that he coached ARod as a rookie, and maybe it will benefit ARod to go back to basics with him.
I think Melky has alot of upside in left field, he might night size up to the caliber of fielders that are out there hitting, but for the Yankees, a .290 bat and fielder with great fielding abilities is just what they need - they lack that outfield defence.
As far as pitchers, the only good ones available with AL experience are Zito, Clemens and Pettite... I wouldnt mind Zito... Clemens and Pettite, I dont know if they will come here - maybe if Torre leaves. As much as people want Moose gone, I doubt hes going anywhere.
As far as Torre is concerned, the whole coaching staff, with the exception of him, has been mutilated. Zimmer is gone, Randolph is gone, Stottlemeyer is gone - I think this contributed to the current demise of the team.
And the BIGGEST mistake made, was probably by Steinbrenner, and not listening to Cashman, and taking the advice of people in Tampa over Cashmans.
And yes, I agree that the AL East is probably the most insane division in the majors... but youll never know what you will get - you have to ask yourself, is the juice worth the squeeze. |

Pettitte isn't coming back - The original reason they let him walk was because they knew of possible elbow issues that would land him on the DL - this came true when Andy joined the Astros and promptly did just that. And at this point, I just hate Clemens.. ugh.
Zito in pinstripes scares me. I think his mentality is better suited for the west coast, or a less rabid media and fan base, than a NY would be. Plus he pitches horribly against Boston. |

Ok, so how do we fix the starting rotation if all the NL players are no good since they dont know how to pitch in the AL, and all the AL free agents are unacceptable?
I think youre being alittle picky for a team that is desperate to get some pitching. Willis during interleague play, gave up 2 runs to Bal, NY and Bos each... going 2-1 against those three - the one loss coming from the Yanks. |

Small sample size.
I'm not against Wilis, but not for the price he will likely command. That's the whole problem. And I have no idea how to fix the starting rotation. :( |

| Well, they can choose to not pick up the options on Sheffield and Abreu, and pool that towards the Willis fund. Move Matsui to RF and put Melky in LF. Move Cano to 3rd on the lineup, Melky will hit 9th. and they are set - they entire focus on the offseason should be to aquire pitchers and a good 1B. |

Abreu is signed through the end of next season. If I had it my way, Abreu would bat 2nd, Jeter 3rd, Giambi 4th, ARod 5th(where he is best suited) and Matsui 6th. Cano's OBP is too low for him to be hitting anywhere above 7th. |
