Escalating situation in (country of) Georgia (pg. 13)

the entire world is full of , imho.

Georgia thought they had US' back and NATO to call for help but Europe turned it's back and resorted to "strong words" and total inaction. I guess no one wants to risk being cold in the winter or having to open up another front with an old enemy.

Russia knows it has very little to lose, A LOT to gain. It's not like it has no market for natural resources or europe has any alternate suppliers. Well... they sort of do - Iran - but which of the two evils you'd rather accept?

Looks like Georgia is that dude that decides to punch a big bully in the nose, thinking his "crew" got his back but his crew just stands back and watches the big bully whop the out of their "buddy", while telling big bully to stop and calling him bad names.

Georgia is alone in this one. No one will lift a finger to help them, unless Russia decides to go va-bank and go for it all. then UN may step in and wag their useless finger.

Global Economy - the biggest war deterrent, peacemaker, and decision infuencer... ain't it?

Like they are any different to any other country.

And the beauty of democratic governments is that they can *shock horror* change their policies. I would hardly call that a weakness of liberal government.

lets not blame the US when it was georgia that "played the NATO card they didn't have yet" (thanks for whomever posted that article).

Bush, Cheney denounce Russian military action

Updated Sun. Aug. 10 2008 11:29 PM ET

CTV.ca News Staff

U.S. President George Bush says the Russian military has launched a disproportionate response to Georgia, the former Soviet republic trying to reclaim the disputed territory of South Ossetia.

In an interview with NBC, Bush said that "we strongly condemn the bombing outside of South Ossetia," and shared his concerns with Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and President Dmitri Medvedev.

Meanwhile, U.S. Vice-President Dick Cheney said late Sunday that Russia's military action against Georgia "must not go unanswered," as the conflict over the disputed territory continued to escalate.

Cheney made his remarks while speaking with Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili. The United States has historically given its support to Georgia, which has been lobbying for inclusion in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

What if, just what if, Russia launched an assault on Georgia to drive oil prices higher and reverse the oil free fall, which would mean less revenue for Russia...

I've been thinking about that. I've also been thinking on the effect this might have on the US elections. People might go for the candidate with more experience, a tougher stance, etc. McCain in other words. So the US talks Georgia into attacking Russia saying they'll back them up, and then they sit by and watch. Putin gets his control over the stray republic, oil companies get expensive oil, and republicans get their candidate a big boost.

This is just a conspiracy theory that may probably be incorrect, and Saakasvili just might be a crazy idiot, but still..something to think about.

Oh having big balls and big guns is this what is all about? Invading a nation and killing civilians is justifiable by your terms just to prove superiority?

Putins nationalism hasnt gotten to you. This is a full scale invasion, Russia is targeting towns and destroying the infrastructure of a nation. Russias actions are immature. Clearly they dont want this to come to an end.

For those idiots Iraq and this violation of the sovereignty of a nation and massacre are uncomperable
