you absolutely missed the point. i wasn't commenting on whether canada has good policies. Only that Canada's wealth is derived from selling its resources to americans. If you think that's a bad thing you are highly misinformed. Even if Canadians weren't as reliant directly on selling to the US the simple fact that americans are in the market drives up the price of everything and makes everyone a little wealthier. This is the same effect china is now having on commodities markets. If you still think its a bad thing you are simply a moron.
Your anti american bull is just getting tired. You should take notice of all the good that americans do around the world. More foreign aid is given by the US government than any other government in the world. Two of the richest people on earth, who are americans - bill gates and warren buffet - have pledged almost all of their wealth to help poor people throughout the world. That's more than 100 billion dollars in donations to help people from other countries.

remember the indonesian earthquake in 2004? americans gave more than twice that of any other country, and this to a muslim nation.

Tell me, what has any iranian done to significantly improve this world? where are the large donations by iran and its people to help the impoverished around the world? where are the iranians when a natural disaster hits in indonesia, pakistan, etc... How many iranians have devoted their lives to improve living conditions in africa? How many iranians have spent their lives researching cures for diseases that don't even affect its people? When a conflict hits a country how much aid do the iranians provide to assist the affected civilians? when you answer those questions then your gripe with americans and your unjustified superiority complex can have some legitimacy. Until then, STFU! |

I've been reading a lot of reports lately suggesting that military confrontation is imminent. Looks like Saakashvilli is getting close to fullfilling his long-time promise to bring separatist Abkhazia under his control using force (one of his election promises). I'll follow this article up with a comprehensive story sometime in the next couple days.
Strangely enough that Western media only covers Georgia, and situation in Akhazia is ignored. Two explosions, and no big deal?

I dont know when you made this thread.. but look at this:

Bank analyst forecast Georgian crisis 2 days early
MOSCOW, Aug 14 (Reuters) - The outbreak of war between Georgia and Russia shocked most of the world last week, but an investment bank analyst predicted it two days in advance.
Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili sent troops into the breakaway, pro-Russian region of South Ossetia on Aug. 7, on the eve of the Beijing Olympic Games, and Russia responded with overwhelming military force.
Geoff Smith, a Kiev-based analyst for Renaissance Capital investment bank, had anticipated the Georgian move with uncanny prescience in an e-mail two days earlier to a fellow strategist.
"So whaddaya think? I say Saakashvili is going to 'restore the territorial integrity of Georgia' five minutes before the opening ceremony starts in Beijing and dare the Russians to invade while the games are on?" the note said.
Reuters has seen a copy of the e-mail and confirmed its validity with both the sender and recipient of the message.
The Kremlin swiftly asserted its vastly superior military might and thousands of Russian troops pushed out Georgian troops from the rebel region. Russian units are still operating inside Georgia proper.
Russian sovereign Eurobond spreads, a measure of investment risk, widened on the hostilities, and shares tumbled.
"It was just intuition," Smith said by telephone. "I said nothing about the possible Russian response, but if you had asked me I would say that Moscow could not have taken it lying down," Smith said.
Explaining his reasoning, the former journalist said the upcoming presidential election in the United States could have played a role in Saakashvili's decision to send troops into South Ossetia.
"Certainly the next White House will not be as supportive of Saakashvili as this one and so if Saakashvili wanted to reunite Georgia he really had to do it this year and he was probably hoping the Olympic Games gave him the right cover," he said.
He refused to forecast how the crisis would end.

| Just watched a press conference with Churkin, the Russian ambassador to the UN, on CNN. So far the Russians hasn't won the pr-war in the west at all, but I think he did a pretty good job at bashing and debunking the press this time! |

Agree, they are slowly getting their point across though, guess people have finally realised that something is not right with the georgian side od the story. I still get the feeling of hostility when CNN anchors talk with russian representatives, though less than a few days ago.
Another interesting article i came across.

you added so much depth with your response. perhaps a well thought-out and well written counter response will give your position credibility. |

i'm surprised so many of you guys outside of the US watch CNN. Although i guess it's similar to me watching the BBC. |

I just heard McCain say (CNN again) that nothing that the georgians "may" have done to provoke the russians warranted such a response. Really? A few thousand russian citizens killed by a georgian strike doesn't warrant such a response? I seem to remember that the last time someone killed a couple of thousand of another country's citizens, that country went on a rampage and bombed two other countries back into the stone age. Guess nobody remembers that any more.
The title of that article just pisses me off. The girl in the video says herself that she has no idea who shot her but the article sports a HUGE headline that it was a russian sniper that shot her. A very poor and sensationalistic choice of words there. When one says russian sniper the mind immediately jumps on an image of a russian soldier wielding something like this, and not someone taking pot shots with a low calibre weapon that actually fired at them. Also five shots fired and the only one that hit, just grazed her hand slightly...that's one lousy sniper there.
And its not that we enjoy watching CNN or something, its just that its the only 24hour news network that my cable provider provides me with. We get some sort of a hybrid international version probably anyway. |

| McCain must of forgot about the US invasion of Grenada to protect "American students". Not only that, but the government was entirely deposed. Compared to that, Russia's actions are relatively soft. |

What angers me is that he is being praised by the media (at lest on CNN) for his reactions about this conflict. Every time he speaks, he pounds on Russia making it sound like Putin and Medvedev were just bored one day and decided to stir up some down in georgia. I'm thinking the man's gotten senile recently and has forgotten that the cold war is over. In fact i have the distinct feeling that what he would love to do the most in this situation is send a battlefleet knocking on Russia's door.
Another thing that made me dislike him in the last few days is when he made a comment that he knows that he speaks foir all americans and that on that day they are all georginans. Now im not an american thus this statement doesnt effect me personally, but if i was i would be profoundly angry at him for making such a statement. I know its mostly a figure of speech, but i still find it inappropriate and quite a bit arrogant.
Saakasvili also makes more and more outrageous statements every time he speaks, yet somehow he still gets airtime and sympathy from the media.
Also just heard this like 5 seconds ago (again CNN...i have to find a more unbiased media outlet as i get more upset every time i see an anchor fish for every bit of dirt on russia from whomever wishes to give it out, yet when a russian representative comes one and is making a point in defence of russia they cant wait to cut him off and change the topic) apparently US and Ukraine have signed a pact to establish a missle defence system in Ukraine but both partiers claim that the move has not been made to antagonise russia. Really, after everything that has been going on in the last few days i find that really hard to believe. |

| McCain certainly does not speak for me when he says, "We're all Georgians." No Mr. McCain..Georgians are Georgians. I am AMERICAN. If Georgia did not try to conquer Tskhinvali, none of this would have happened. Russia is not the aggressor here. |
