It depends what Russia decides to do. If they decide to join and support Ossetian rebels - well, then, Georgia is ed.

If Russia quiets and tries to defeat Georgian forces using volunteer troops and military supplies - no, Georgia will take over the entire South Ossetia.

Thats where I stand. I think Russia needs to decide, and quickly, and let Georgia know to scare them off so that Saakashvilli can piss in his pants, withdraw his troops and come crying to his poppa Bush for next move.

It looks like its flying gracefully, over an undetermined area, plus Wikipedia has photos like that one. I am still not convinced.

P.S. - Georgia has some SU-25 / SU-27 aircraft in its arsenal ;-)

Sigh ... Russia bombing its own Ossetian friends? Positions in the capital have been changing hands all day! You think Russian plane would know who they are bombing in Tskhinvali from such an altitude, seriously?!? Ossetian troops are small numbered (South Ossetia's total population is about 70,000). Besides, you cannot tell Russian insignia on the plane.

Claims that Russia is bombing Tskhinvali (opinion) are weak, especially when Georgia is (thats a fact).

Plus, it doesnt really matter - Georgia attacked South Ossetia first. Tskhinvali is getting pummeled by Georgian aggression.

Guerra - find me an article where Russian government says they sent in troops. But I think that actually might be happening.

The Russian army is approaching Tskhinvali, the provincial capital of Georgia's separatist South Ossetia province. There are reports of fierce fighting between Russian troops and Georgian forces. Moscow says the operation in South Ossetia is to protect the many Russian nationals in the province. South Ossetian separatists claim that 1400 people have been killed so far.

Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili says Russia is at war with his country. Tbilisi claims that the Russians have bombed several targets in Georgia. Moscow alleges that Georgian forces have killed 12 Russian soldiers serving with the stabilisation force in South Ossetia.

Tbilisi has announced plans to withdraw 1000 Georgian soldiers from Iraq to help defend the country against what it calls "Russian aggression". The Georgian government says it has asked the United States to supervise the withdrawal from Iraq.

The UN Security Council is currently discussing the situation in the breakaway Georgian province. The US and the European Union are both sending special envoys to the area to mediate in the conflict. US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has called on Russia to withdraw from South Ossetia.

^^^Yeah, Miss Rice wants Russian forces out so that Georgian forces can continue the fighting and "finish the job" and cleanse the region of the Ossetians.

OK, now it seems to be confirmed that Russian troops have entered South Ossetia, Guerra was right ;-) maaaan, I never thought that Russia would be fighting Georgia directly.

OK, now THIS is f-cking crazy , if this is true! read:

quote:

Moscow – APA. Russia’s Defense Ministry confirmed that additional forces had been sent to support peacekeepers in Georgia-Ossetia conflict zone, APA reports quoting RIA Novosti.

The ministry said necessary assistance would be offered to the Russian peacekeepers and citizens of unrecognized republic. North Caucasus military district said that Russian combat equipment entered Tskhinvali. Georgian new agencies report that Russian military aircrafts bombed Vaziani base near Tbilisi at 15.10 by local time. Two bombs were reportedly dropped on the military base. No casualties are reported in the base. Gruziya Online website reports that the aircraft that bombed Vaziani base had taken off from the territory of Armenia. The agency mentions that there is an air regiment in Russian army’s 102nd base in Gumru, Armenia. According to the agreement signed between Georgia and Armenia, Armenia can not allow any other state to attack Georgia from its territory.

U.S. President George Bush met with Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin in Beijing and called on the parties to cease the fire in Georgia-Ossetia conflict zone immediately. European Union and OSCE released analogous messages.

If Russia has indeed bombed Georgian targets considerable distance away from the conflict zone, that would be terrible. I hope that its just Georgian sabotage to blame on the Russians, otherwise this will hurt Russian image pretty bad.

EDIT: CONFIRMED! Russian tanks have entered Tskhinvali. Just saw on the Russian television, and they clearly stated so.

And another announcement - United Nations Security Council was yet again unable to reach any decision on the issue :whip:

I can't find an article that specifically says Russian leaders sending soldiers in. I know of an article that states russian president is sending armored units into the capital city of S. Ossetia. But most sources are not realible. And mexico is not really covering this event.

No, you were right! See me previous post. Russian news just confirmed that Russian tanks have reached Tskhinvali. So I am sure that planes have done some sorties, too.

What's in in for Russia? Protecting this territory that's not even bigger than Luxembourg and is populated by only some 70-80,000 people. I think the Russian leadership believes they are being surrounded Western satellite states. Hence Russia wants to send bombers to Cuba and foster a strong relationship with Venezuela, Iran, and China. The classic age-old east versus west conflict.
