thanks! I try, I just feel like my head has been so filled with garbage and too many opinions as opposed to facts. Although, this puts me in quite a pickle, as most books dont necessarily have the correct facts either (as shown also by the WIDE degree of information people have in this very thread.....I am constantly wondering WHO is right, but I guess no one will really ever know, right? I just hate speculation.) I am not a huge fan of debate, rather, I would rather just know the correct information and process it myself, which is why I find historical debates so incredibly frustrating. Too many opinions, facts, rumors, myths, bias, pride, and ego's get in the way.

I, myself have read for well over a half a decade on *African* history (I could go on about it forever), but can honestly say that my discussions with the aforementioned friend, about Russia, are lacking. I dont have the years of knowledge she has on the subject, so I dont put up any decent arguments LOL. She did say that she has the Russian newspaper delivered, but I am pretty sure that it is written in Russian and wont be of any use to me ;)

Hey, its all good - Russia isn't the center of the world, and you probably know more about Africa than I do. This is not a competition for who knows the most of politics anyway. Politics are quite useless actually and can cause bad arguments between friends, haha :)

And you're right, the political discussions shouldn't be considered as who is right or settle personal egos. When I argue, I usually dont try to insult others, but its hard to wage a good discussion sometimes when others dont think respectfully like I do. Politics are not always facts anyway, but someone's perception on an issue, and can twisted and turned in many ways. If you read only one view on a topic, you are highly succeptible to bias. Two, perhaps less. Three or more, and not only you see the bigger picture, but you're less biased! Thats why I respect and don't mind for ALL views to be posted. You may never know when something interesting pops up!

As someone on this thread mentioned it earlier, in my youth, too, I was highly succeptable to biased history, when I was learning WW2 history from the Russian perspective (it wasnt a lie though!). In Canada, I learned a whole new side of it - no, mostly not in high school (boring), but on my own time.

Hahahah! :) Well, look at it this way. Ann Coulter came to Canada recently. Her views are obviously extreme, even some Conservatives shiver when they hear her name. But what University of Ottawa did was truly despicable, they literally forced her to cancel the appearance, only to the utter dismay of a small pocket of couple hundred of her supporters, driven away by a thousand-strong mob of haters. It was a bad image for Canada, for us. Who cares about the dumb she says - we know she's crazy, and by trying to stop her we are only helping her cause!

Free speech is free speech. When people start saying 'cant say this' or 'cant say that', thats when politicians take advantage and pass dumb laws, setting a dangerous precedent. In several European countries it is AGAINST THE LAW to deny Holocaust or the Armenian Genocide! You can go to jail for it! Free speech is being limited on mass scale already in a bunch of European countries to prevent the so-called "insult to religion" and "threat to public order". You cant criticize Islam without getting stabbed and threatened by a bunch of people. Its absurd.
