Japan was a huge threat
considering that if the Japanese didn't attack, the Americans wouldn't mobilize
please continue :) |
yea the Japanese were total minnows in the world at this time. I guess that is how you would explain them defeating the Russians at war a little over a quarter century prior to WWII. |

let's all stick to WW2 for now - next thing we know, we're moving to 1700's |

Considered by who? Where is your source for this claim?
Point me to one historian who claims, categorically as you do, that if Japan didn't attack, then America would not have joined the war. |
I'm pretty sure this is the only fact that every should be agreeing on - IF Japan did not attack Pearl Harbour, US would have not declared the war in '41 (at least that early). And it took them 2 years to finally join the combat on the continenet (January 1943). |

Listen, the point is that the Japanese were anything but pushovers from about 1905 and onwards. In fact they were major players on the global scene and they had substantial military might. Thus, for you to downplay the Japanese as a non-threat is simply asinine. Sorry.

In the leadup to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor the US was ready and waiting to declare war on the Axis powers. They (US Government) were actually looking for an "excuse" to get involved in the war. It was the American people that initially did not want to have any involvement in another war overseas. So they needed to be sold on going to war. And that is where Pearl Harbor comes into play.
There are countless documents and sources that point to American knowledge of the Japanese plans @ Pearl Harbor. They did not act on this information however, because they wanted to be attacked which would in turn allow them to "enter the war" on just grounds in the eyes of the American public. |

LOL what fact?
If this is such a fact, then why can't you point me to one, JUST ONE, historian who can substantiate this so-called fact?
Also, I like how you weakened your original position from

to
| quote: | | US would have not declared the war in '41 (at least that early) |
It's a nice try. But you're still dead wrong. |

I'm sorry but to me that just sounds that they were waiting to decide whose side to join, hence why I mentioned how they only joined in the continental combat in '43. If you look at the timeline, prior that they have not done much. But as soon as 1943 kicked in, it was game time for them - May 12 1943 North Africa with the Brits, July'43 - Sicily, September'43 - Italy.
I wonder where were they when Stalingrad was almost destroyed.. |

Yes.
You can read all about it in a 6-volume series titled The Second World War. It was written by a person who I believe can speak on the topic with some authority; a fella' named Winston Churchill.
You'll find plenty of information to educate yourself on WWII in there. And if you want to learn more, then go read the authors I suggested to geroin. |

another good book to read to get some valuable insight, from a German perspective, is the Goebbels Diaries (Hitler's Minister of Propaganda). |

They were busy fighting the Japanese...
Alone...
And I don't think they gave a rat's ass about Stalingrad...
Until Pearl Harbor, the people didn't think it was worth entering another combat arena that wasn't local...
They said they wouldn't after the American lives lost in WW1... |
