Terrible news. The President was a very important person in the history of this country.

The head of the Polish National Bank/Reserve was also killed.

So sad. RIP.

My condolences to the people of Poland and the families and relatives of those that died. I wish them courage and strength to persevere and quickly elect those that will do what needs to be done to keep Poland a free and prosperous nation.

This is a bad deal. I am wondering about how this will impact the political temperature of Poland. Hopefully they continue their thrust towards the west. The country has been on the cusp of major transition and growth for many years - I pray this continues.

I understand that there are many old planes, but this is a president...can you imagine Harper or Obama on a 20 year old plane? no because that just doesn't happen

Both of the Boeings that are in use for the US president to fly in right now were built in 1990 which makes them both 20 years old...

And my darling Kris, I have been a HUGE aircraft enthusiast since before you were a glimmer in your parents eyes...

Have you ever been aboard a Tupolev???

I have... And they are built like pieces of ...

Apparently the pilot was instructed not to land at Smolensk due to heavy fog and poor visibility. ATC instructed to divert to Minsk, but instead the pilot proceeded anyways.

Either way, terrible news. RIP.

it's NOTHING to do with how the plans are built! it's the age like someone said
Russian planes have been flying without a problem for years (I've been on board of one) - wear'n'tear is the problem and no funds to upgrade

It was confirmed that pilot was making 4th attempt to land the plane.. meaning plane was in working confiditon. The rules are that if u cannot land the plane by second attempt, you should try another airport. And i was also confirmed that polish pilot ignored the request to land on another airport. Basicly relaying on his personal experience.

Here are some of the notable responses from some of the world's leaders. At least the Russians have responded in a very appropriate and respectful way, read:

The accident saw the death of many of the president' s senior staff, the entire command of Poland's armed forces, the head of the national bank, members of parliament and senior clergy.

Actually, "Poland's presidency is mainly ceremonial but the constitution gives the president responsibility for "representing" the country abroad."

But still, he was a powerful Conservative force, especially for Poland and on the international scene.

Heh, a Tupolev. Figures.

From what I've read on BBC today, Tupolevs have a pretty good safety record when compared to planes of similar generation and age. Many of the past accidents, including this one, have either been because of the weather or other induced accidents. Many Tupolevs are used in difficult weather and geographic conditions, so hence the craft is more prone to accidents.

Surely they may not be as comfortable and spacious/luxurius as other brands, or as modern, but they are built well. They are just not very efficient on fuel and lack modern electronics / setup.

Indeed, even though some other presidents use older planes, but Tupolevs are no longer being produced, they're antiques, even the Russian domestic airlines dont buy them anymore. Important people aren't supposed to be risking their lives like this.

We'll see what happens, I really hope they get to the bottom of this issue, soon. Its very important for everyone that all questions are answered, nothing is missed, and that this situation doesnt affect Polish-Russian relations negatively. Although I cant imagine things being like they were before this accident.
