I love the Internet. I use it every day. Maybe a fifth of my waking day is spent on it. It makes my life easier for sure. Why do you think I pay these exorbinant prices month after month to use it...
All I'm saying is that as good as it is, if you shut it off, would the world stop? I don't think so...
If you shut off electricity, people would die. A lot of the world would actually stop. Albeit temporarily as I do believe we could survive for the most part with out electricity as well...
You shut off the web and it would suck. We'd have to do more work. Talk to people more. Get off our asses....
Maybe it is a little bad after all... |
honestly, unfortunately this makes it sound like you don't know anything about how the internet works. and what sort of stuff it is involved in. background stuff that you don't even think about.
i really think of it as electricity. and i like the fact that you admit that people would suffer temporarily without electricity. i mean humans survived without fire even. but what kind of life is that. no one wants to move backwards. do they?
you are thinking of the internet as just forums and facebook and youtube and netflix. it is so much more than that. banking works via internet, all communications run via the internet, defense systems run via internet, research and development, etc, etc, etc. |

We've survived millions of years without internet....if it was lost....sure there would be chaos but humans would survive....it wouldn't be the end of the world. |

Hmm..lets see what would suffer:
- inter bank communication
- health care to remote areas
- any government work
- all media companies wouldnt work
- emergency services
on and on and on. The entire world's infrastructure would suffer. Remember, more of the world's population now lives within urban areas, than those in rural areas. |

Its almost like you have this fetish to get to a simpler time, where everything is easier to grasp.
I'm just upset that millions of years of evolution coupled with billions for star formation has lead the universe to manifest itself as someone who doesn't mind erasing everything and going to a simpler time instead of taking the rout that helps us advance beyond our primitive ways.
We didn't survive millions of years without internet, we evolved for millions of years to invent it and use it to our benefit. |

I'm not sure I get the issue here. They're changing the price structure of a service. The internet is no different then any other service held for sale; subsequently, I don't see why it should be priced any differently. Pay for use seems the only fair system. If you don't think the service is worth the new price that will be attached to it then cancel the service. If the demand dries up the prices will come down. My guess is that they could double the price and most of you would maintain your subscriptions so quit your bitching. |
Not really. Our whole society is so dependent on being connected to the internet right now, you can't just say " it" and cancel it like with premium cable or other expendable services. Pay for use would be fair, if it was priced fairly, which it isn't. They're using the argument that more use somehow raises THEIR costs of upkeep, which is complete bull, and in turn they're gouging the consumer every which way they can because they believe that most consumers are morons that'll just eat up the bull they feed them, or they're too apathetic to do anything about it.
Not to mention that this pay-per-use system is going backwards. Like I said in an earlier post this pay-per-use strategy was used by developing countries 15 years ago. Is Canada a developing country? I'd like to believe it isn't, but the people running it are making sure it is (and then there's the people who let them get away with it...hooray!).
Pay-per-use works with things like electricity and water to stop morons from wasting it. We're not wasting internet resources by downloading or uploading more, by gaming more or by talking with our families half-way across the world more. |

Sorry but you're incorrect. You could go ahead and cancel your personal internet subscription and still be connected via any number of pay for use or even free to the user portals (libraries). We could very easily say screw you, suffer some inconvienence and save the costs... the reason we don't do that is because we have all (or most anyway) determined that the benefits of in-home access outweigh the costs for same.

To be frank I don't give a why they charge what they charge; all that matters to me is the cost:benefit analysis I do. Is the benefit worth the cost; if yes then buy if no then cancel. Ultimately, that's what we're all going to do. You can yell and scream all you want but if you're not willing to give up in-home access then all your bellyaching means exactly sweet all. You talk about apathy, whinning on an internet fourm, hell, even protesting in the streets is not really much better then doing nothing at all... you want to make a difference; cancel your service.... calling Rogers and Bell theiving bastards while writing them a cheque doesn't accomplish anything. |

This.
Electricity, water, energy etc are FINITE resources and pay per use is there because they're not unlimited resources.
The transfer of information is not a finite resource as those shown above. |

The infrastructure that makes that transfer possible does have a finite lifespan, which is decreased by increased traffic. Just sayin'. |

As a matter of fact I'm with neither Bell or Rogers  I'm with a smaller company that's getting completely screwed by them thanks to this legislation. I left those 2 because of the bull they were pulling. And Bell and Rogers, instead of competing, are taking them out through the government (which is supposed to represent consumer, individual interests, and not corporation interests). Sounds very healthy for the economy, no?
And simply going ahead and cancelling everything isn't a viable option either. |
