Clearly, the pertinent issue is not whether or not there should be regulation; it is how this tool for fairness (which is what regulation can be, when correctly used to encourage pareto optimal equilibra) should be used. If there were not minimal laws and regulations in the telecommunications industry, the big players would not even be obliged to provide access to their networks. Even within a well-functioning capitalist system, there has to be a base-level of regulation to create the framework and level playing field within which competition can thrive - e.g. basic economics states that there should be minimal barriers to entering and leaving an industry, which is clearly not the case in telecomm's. This decision smacks of corruption and the continual inaction of the supposedly pro-consumer and pro-competition Harper government leaves them open to the charge of hypocrisy.

Such a good point! I have never considered this before. For a market to operate efficiently and competition to be engendered, another one of the key requirements is for all players to have access to good information, upon which they can base their decisions. There is a clear informational asymetry and imbalance here, as the companies are privy to more information, which they can use to exert power and ultimately screw over consumers.
Voters need to turn things like this into an election issue. It would certainly be a good way for political parties to differentiate themselves. Wouldn't the disaffected youth take an interest if they were told that someone will help bring in policies that could potentially save them hundreds of dollars a year, when you combine extortionate internet and mobile phone costs?

the profit margins of the telecoms/ISP are astronomical....and they sure want to keep the margins that way because there is not much competition. A 3 player field is NOT competition.
My wish is to have the field opened up to all players. I wanna see Verizon/Comcast/ATT/Sprint/You name it to come in and shake up the market. No more sheltering of Bell/Rogers/Cogeco/etc. Let the big fish eat them out

My buddy in HK just found out about our broadband and carrier data caps; he mocked how Canada is suppose to move forward, but instead we are going back to prehistoric ages.
With that many millions of billions of ppl crammed in that small island, all services they have are unlimited. :(
If it comes to this point; I'm willing to protest for my internet freedom.
