for beginners I usually recommend anything in their price range, but becareful, this equipment can get pricey!
The first two things to get are snow pants and a snow jacket. You want to make sure you are warm when you go out there.
For equipment, you're best bet is to go into a ski shop and ask for their recommendation. I'd say pretty much anything that will last you 2 seasons worth of riding. That's usually the life span of some of the equipment if not more than 2. |

kidnyce's explanation is pretty good... if you really really want to stick with snowboarding, i would suggest getting an intermediate board so that your skills grow with it. shorter boards are easier to turn, longer boards are a little more stable at high speeds. boots, do you want something stiff or soft with support? make sure that the boots really hug your feet when you buy. and try try try everything. and bindings, those can be ultra responsive, or soft and mellow when you ride. |

You might want to wait on purchasing equipment; there are places that let you rent equipment for the entire season. Find out if you really like it enough to spend $700+ on the setup. I just spent 850 (450 board + 200 bindings + 200 boots), on a set up this season (not including an extra 350 on outerwear), so its definately a costly endeavor. Also you should be absolutely sure what kind of riding you want to do so that you can purchase the right board. Renting for the season gives you the chance to find out what you like before you drop a G on this sport.
Back to the point, regardless of what anyone says, burton is not the best equipment. Don't listen to the burton whores, its the easy choice because its the most highly advertised equipment. Burton also makes tooooo many models (27 mens models), as a result none of the boards really stand out. Although the boards are quality, they are not worth the money you're going to spend. The high price for some of burtons equipment is due in part to the high cost of producing a sale (advertising) not the superior quality. If you really want to purchase a board and are looking for a freestyle board, go with the Ride DH. Everyone who knows their will tell you that the DH is HOT. I can't really recommend for other styles because i'm a straight up park rat, except when i'm out west, but the freestyle boards work just fine in bowls and steeps. |

Burton def makes some of the best outerwear. I have a set of ak 3l goretex 3 layer pants, and they block everything. Not to mention their stuff has a lifetime guarantee. I can't say anything about the rest of the gear as I dont own any of it other than a R.E.D. helmet. But to me the bindings look a bit overpriced for what you get as are the boots.\
