That was a great read... kind of difficult not to feel some sympathy for the guy. |

I haven't been following this but it's my neighboring country and I have family who are Algerian, so I can't help but be happy for them. :) |
I'm happy for them and my whole family came from the other side of the Mediterranean :p
This was quite a feat, as Algeria had never advanced to the knock-out stage before, and most people would've written them off as the weakest team in their group. No one could've seen it coming. When newscasters listed the best African squads in the competition, they'd name a team from Sub-Saharan Africa. Not a single Bedouin bought a TV set to watch the games, for they had something more interesting to do, like watching camels sneeze. Northerners here in Brazil were so amused by the Algerian presence they didn't even notice our countries are all united by the love we share for couscous (though our cuscuz is a lot simpler than yours). It was so down below the Coca-Cola FIFA ranking, it was widely assumed their players were in a lesser league, probably ranked by Pepsi or something. Intellectuals around here knew Camus, and that's about everything we knew about Algeria, other than that their football team arguably sucked.
They lost to Belgium, as expected. But then, they massacred South Korea, becoming the first African nation to score 4 goals in a single World Cup match. Was it a fluke, or was Algeria a new football powerhouse? That's what today's game was supposed to show.
When Russia scored the first goal, it was assumed logic would remain supreme and there would be no room for surprises... and then Algeria did it. North Africa rejoiced. Libyan rebels declared independence so they can join Algeria for the World Cup. Tunisian politicians decided to name the country "East Algeria" for the following month. And Egyptians became even angrier without their Tahiti Brown King to soothe them.
In a perfect world, they'd get to play against France now, just so they could head-butt the first racist to yell "pied-noir" during the game. Peace would reign on Earth. Love would rule supreme. And Chinese tourists would eat Suarez. But, they'll face Germany next week instead. |

So, Germany and Algeria will face each other at the next round. What a revenge this could be.
In 1982, Germany and Algeria was at the same group and they draw. In the last round, Algeria was almost qualified, the only result that could sent Algeria home would be Germany 1 x 0 Austria. What happened? 1x0. Algeria was out.
32 years later, almost at the same date, Germany wins 1x0 in the last round, but this time, they can't escape from Algeria.
Just a little cool story about WC :) |

glad Belgium made it to the final 16, but we really played a first round with some aweful football ... and our coach is to blame. Already in the qualifying round we never really played good football, but in the end we qualified quite easily for the WC. I would have thought that the weeks before the WC would help to sufficiently prepare us for the tournament, but now I'm starting to question what they've been doing all these weeks. A good coach would have stood much further with this team today.
With Wilmots I don't really expect to see great football; he prefers to play on the safe side and counts on the individual talent and class of his players. With some luck, it could bring us far, but I'm not a fan of it.
I've seen the matches of the USA and especially against Portugal I thought they were pretty good. They don't have the individual talent of the Belgian players, but they play as a real team. Could go either way |

Indeed, my thoughts as well, although I really hoped Belgium had played a bit better. But looking at results only they did very well. |

Meanwhile I came to the same conclusion.

OMA, I had never wanted Algeria this hard to win. I knew about this incident, but I had no idea they wanted Algeria to be out.
I wish I could do something other than eat couscous all day long to show Algerians my support :( |

I don't see any hotties? I laugh when I watch univision they do closeups of hot chicas in the stands.
Bel v kor was a terrible game. Looks like the usa could beat them but they put very little effort in that game.
Btw I love Felini fro. |

Football needs a dark horse, anti-star like Suarez. I think this is nothing but a bunch of whining. |
Football needs a guy who's gonna bite chunks of meat off players ? I was a big fan of him during his ajax days I do agree that 4 months is out of hand though. |
