Also Marco Reus won't play for Germany and they already missed many.

I mentioned Sochi, rather than the World Cup, because it's the Winter Olympics. It's still to early to say whether those protests will have any impact on the Summer Olympics (and virtually impossible to tell whether these protests or Qatar will do their best to tarnish FIFA's reputation). If they achieve that... it will be the mother of unintended consequences.

Some interesting things I've seen in the Guardian recently:

http://www.theguardian.com/football...laims-world-cup

quote:
Yet while happy to bask in the acclaim of his delegates, the normally publicity hungry Blatter has taken the pragmatic decision not to risk appearing before the crowds in any of Brazil's host cities.

Beyond the Fifa Congress, discontent is widespread – most pertinently from a section of the Brazilian public who viscerally love the game but hate Fifa's approach and have used the World Cup as a symbol of their wider discontent with the government's spending priorities. Anti-Fifa graffiti have spread and no one is quite sure whether mass street protests will flare in the same way as they did during last year's Confederations Cup.

quote:
"The negative tenor of the public debate around Fifa at the moment is neither good for football nor for Fifa and its partners," said a spokesperson for Adidas

There is an unprecedented level of scrutiny levelled at FIFA right now, to the point that even the all-important corporate partners are starting to get worried about their image. The protests in Brazil had undeniably been part of that. It might be an unintended consequence as the protests have probably come too late to reverse any of the damage the World Cup has inflicted on the country, but I'd still say it's a benefit if they contribute to the current atmosphere of distrust and cynicism towards FIFA in particular and hosting major sporting events in general. It seems very likely to me that after what's gone down in the last couple of years, nobody is likely to view hosting a World Cup with such naive optimism again.

Speaking of FIFA, Watch this clip by John Oliver.

It would be a shame if Brazil's world cup was tainted with massive riots.

FIFA is stupidly money-driven now. Qatar World Cup is going to be hot! Can't wait to see that! :stongue:

Also, I'm surprised Lira isn't hosting any TAs for the world cup at his place. It is complete disrespect for the rest of the world.

I unfortunately don't know much about FIFA, though I expect that will change soon; does anyone know who is the benefactor of FIFA's profits? Jon Oliver mentioned in his show that FIFA has a bank account with a billion dollars or pounds, can't remember which, but who gets all of that? Is it just divided up to the various teams every time there is a world cup?

interesting read from the 2007-2010 financial report. some highlights:

quote:
FIFA recorded a positive four-year result of USD 631 million. This result is based on total revenue of USD 4,189 million and total expenditure of USD 3,558 million.

quote:
As at 31 December 2010, FIFA’s balance sheet totalled USD 2,145 million, with reserves of USD 1,280 million. The increase in FIFA’s reserves arose from the annual result of USD 202 million and the change in the hedging reserves of USD 17 million.

I hope you're right and this was a positive consequence of the protests, even if it's an unintended one.

Naturally, I'm more troubled about the impact in my own country, and I don't think it was overall positive, but if this turns out to promote a clean-up in FIFA's headquarters, then all the more power to the people :)

From what I understand that belongs to FIFA itself (as it's got its own staff and whatnot), and they may forward this money to smaller confederations if need be. I reserve myself the right to be mistaken.

I don't think the teams see any of it at all. Players for the English national team are paid a fairly nominal sum for each appearance by our own FA, and this money is generally given to charity anyway.

FIFA are supposed to spend their money on "football development" - building facilities all over the world for young players to use - but apparently that only accounts for a sixth of its expenditure, and it spends more on operating costs such as wages and travel (some good numbers in this article). As for where the rest goes... it's a mystery. Straight into the pockets of the "FIFA family", most likely. It's quite absurd how naked the corruption is.

Almost game time! Yay!

Well, that's a surprise.
