back in the day Cleveland was a complete industrial city and its directly against the lake. The river runs through downtown and into the lake. Well all those industrial steel and chemical plants would use the river water to cool their machines and help with manufacturing...so a lot of oil, chemicals, and crap would get into the river and buildup since the Lake doesn't move any water..it just pushes water back up the river.
Also there was way more shipping done here during that industrious time, so the run-off from fuel from the tanker and cargo ships would run into the river.
You have one spark, one fire...bam the river lit up. And it burned for awhile too...
After that the government created the EPA--Environmental Protection Agency, which my Dad now works for (hence my nerd knowledge on the subject) to protect the waterways, they cleaned up the river and have been continually trying to clean up the lake and it's been ok since. Its getting better...the funny smell is gone. |

| ha it was funny when the promoters here tried to do a "Yacht Party" with Sasha and Digweed on the river a few years ago...i think they only sold half the tickets and S&D haven't come back since..they go to Columbus or Detroit. Can you imagine that party...and then the river catches on fire? :stongue: :stongue: |
