Oh... so now Civil Unions are similar to marriage? Funny- last week all the braying donkeys on the left were screaming bloody murder, in defense of Prop 8 being overturned, about how that's just treating them like 2nd class citizens; that Civil Unions are discriminatory and marriage is what they should be entitled to for equality's sake. I'll say again: Obama Speaketh, therefore it is truth. :stongue:

I love how all you liberals (mostly the American ones) rabidly support pieces of the Constitution when it's convenient for them, then speak out the other side of their mouth about how it's a living breathing document that needs to change as times change. What you just said, Lira, is where the argument keeps getting stuck. This is not what the argument is about- freedom of Religion. It's about the LOCATION. They know they're stirring up a tornado by doing this... they claim they're trying to build bridges and should have their sensibilities respected. But they refuse to acknowledge the sensibilities of a vast majority of American opposition to it while the woulds of 9/11 are still fresh. They refuse to have it build anywhere else while claiming to be open to community outreach. You can't force bridge building on people.

There are muslims who are American citizens, have fought and died for this country, and some who were victims of 9/11 (that is, workers in the WTC and Pentagon) - chances are their friends and families would benefit from this center. Like I said earlier, there are probably plenty of cab drivers who would be there.

This is not an issue of appeasing terrorists. This is an issue of protecting the constitutional rights for a group of Americans who have suffered and prospered as Americans. Do you really think the entire muslim population is trying to piss off the Americans by building it there? It would probably be very convenient for a lot of the citizens living around that area. It's like you think they're trying to build it to conspire against us like all muslims are evil extremists.

"WhooCares speaketh, therefore it is truth."

Jesus, dude. Just because one person on the "left" has an opinion, doesn't mean that it's shared by everybody on the "left". The same can go for your "right", too. in' A. :stongue:

Also, stop acting as though we all worship him. I like some things he does, I don't like other things that he does. Hell, I probably dislike more than I like, but does that mean that I shouldn't sit here and say, "Here, here!" in response to his remarks on this issue?

You're looney. :stongue:

if you had made this the locus of your argument you actually would have had a point.

but you went off the rails badly by threatening people off the boards (seriously, wtf) and making specious assertions and bad analogies (eg. the nyc islamic cultural center is like a nazi memorial at auschwitz. it's not: a memorial to the 19 hijackers would be that sort of equivalent).
-

my thoughts, as a born-and-bred nyc-er and a common sense liberal:

-do our bearded buddies have a legal and a civil libertarian right to build their center? -- yes

-is fox news, the17ss and everyone else getting their panties in way too big of a bunch and using this to spew racist bull? -- yes

-should this building go up? no
