As long as we're talking about Saul Alinsky, you should see all the community mobilization going on in DC this weekend - Glenn Beck is a fast learner! |

But on a serious note, a question:
If it is outrageous for the same people who reflexively insist that confirmed and coordinated Islamic terrorist attacks are “isolated incidents” that don’t reflect on Muslims generally to suddenly insist that this one lone, despicable act somehow reflects the views and attitudes of, say, the 70 percent of Americans who oppose the Ground Zero mosque, then likewise wouldn’t it be safe to say that it would be outrageous for the same people who reflexively insist that confirmed and coordinated Islamic terrorist attacks are indeed a reflection on Muslims generally to suddenly insist that the cabbie knifing in New York is simply a lone, despicable act that in no way reflects the views and attitudes of, say, the 70% of Americans who oppose the Ground Zero mosque?
We're talking about equally small minorities, really. 2/3 of the world's Muslims don't even live in the Middle East, much less Iraq. And of those that live in the Middle East, how many are radically fundamentalist? Maybe 1%? The vast majority of Muslims are peaceful residents of Indonesia, China, India, or Bangladesh. If we're going to paint with broad brush strokes, let's at least be honest about how many people we're painting.
This whole scenario has made me so cynical about conservative grassroots politics. If anybody thinks that the people making a stink about the Cordoba Community Center (can we stop calling it a mosque, please?) actually care about the presence of the community center itself, you simply aren't paying attention. This is a community center that will be run by a Bush-appointed cultural ambassador to the Middle East, and financed by a part-owner of Newscorp, the parent company of Fox News. It's either hypocrisy or cynicism of the absolute worst magnitude for so-called conservatives to decry religious freedom and tar and feather their own allies as members of some pseudo-secret liberal cabal to institute Shari'a law in America. It makes them look dumb and clueless, and is completely counterproductive on so many levels.
It's become so much harder to respect Tim Pawlenty, Newt Gingrich, etc. for any intellectual capacity if they are this clueless about what they're criticizing. When they go on FoxNews to decry the nature of the funding of the mosque, insisting that it's being funded by anti-free speech Islamic radicals, I just want to scream at the television that the man funding the mosque is the same one allowing them to demagogue against him on screen. Who stands up for freedom of speech, now? They are trampling America's values. It's become increasingly hard to conceptualize Pawlenty or Sarah Palin as pro-America when they dedicate so much time and energy to absolutely desecrating America's reputation as a place that sticks up for freedom of expression and religious practice. |

Hence, the parade of emoticons behind your reply? As though the credentials you've qualified your opinions with, haven't suffered enough, already.

I'd have tried diplomacy (and aesthetic design), but I've never seen that win, either. ;) |
