Also Sarah, I don't think it's whether there's a 'better' alternative. It's just having the financial system down south and others be more accountable for huge screw ups and not have stuff done on purpose to screw over the population. |
This movement is completely about having a better system. It doesn't seem like the 99% would be satisfied if the banks issued a collective notice saying, "sorry we ed you over, thanks for continuing to be a valued customer" and then went on with business as usual. |

On the contrary, I think what is becoming apparent, especially in the past 3 years, is that the current financial structure is tearing the Western world apart. |
Poor decisions by INDIVIDUALS are what is "tearing the Western world apart" not any structure or system.
This is a perfect example of some people's (including the Occupy folks) refusal to take personal responsibility for their own (and other's) situation.
Blame the system, blame the structure, blame the corporations, blame the 1%, blame the man, blame the (elected or not) government, blame, blame, blame, blame, blame.
Nobody forced anybody to take out mortgages they couldn't afford (caveat emptor). Nobody forced people to over-extend themselves and forget about saving for a rainy day. Nobody forced people into "buy now, pay later" mentality. Nobody forced anybody to go to Harvard on student loans. Nobody forced people into being greedy. Funny how greed only exists when talking about others vs. oneself - point proven.
I think what is becoming apparent is the world's general lack of personal responsibility for anything and an apathy and expectation that things should be "easy" or "simple" just because one wants them to be.
Unfortunately the real world requires hard work, risk, sacrifice and investment to get something out of it (to get anything out of it); it's much easier to blame others than to take ownership over your situation and make something out of it. |

The problem is that it's the flawed system which allows these individuals to take advantage of it and "tear the world apart." We wouldn't be in this mess if the financial system in the USA had been more tightly regulated, as it is here.
It also doesn't help that the individuals who are taking advantage of these short comings are the ones who sit in power, and when everything starts to fall apart as it is now there's nobody to hold anyone else accountable.
That's what the Occupy movement is trying to change; the way the system is set up now the people in power (the 1%, the "man", the corporations) will continue to act like reckless teenagers without a care in the world. They don't care one slightest bit about the consequences their actions have on the rest of the people, the country and the world as long as their pockets are lining up with more and more money.
Isn't it funny that the same people responsible for the '08 crisis are all still sitting in power? What kind of system is it when the people responsible for this mess aren't being held accountable?

Actually people are indirectly forced into most of those options.

That's true to an extent. The real world requires a lot more than hard work, risk, sacrifice and investment. And of course it's easier to blame others than take ownership over ones own situation, however, to imply that the Occupy movement is about would be pretty ignorant. |

ok so much wrong with this where to start.
1) They have powerful individuals at the top to make you do whatever they want you to do. Yes it comes down to your choice at the end but the choice you make is the choice they wanted you to make. Except now people are starting to walk up from the deep sleep they are in and its way too late.
2) The monetary system is a huge problem. I dont understand how you cant see this. The only way it keeps going is when people keep the "money" in banks and never take it out. Again is starting to hit the fan with mass loans coming due.
3) you talk about greed. Again they people at the top make you feel that way. How do they do this? main steam media. They tell you everything you want to hear. Yes its your choice again but they put it in a way to make you feel what they want you to feel. Its crazy what you can make people do just by mind control. eg The holocaust. There was a teacher who did an experiment with his school (cant remember what the doc is called) but in it he makes the kids do what he wants just by mind ing them with tactics learned from the holocaust. Well guess what? We have been mind ed to the point that we think the millions and millions of people who die from malnutrition is not our problem. or that the wars are necessary because the boogie man will come if we dont. Or that president obama is actually going to save us with his change, change, change, change lol!!!!
Yes its 100% our own fault to think that a government owned by the royal family (dont even get me started on them) and corporations overseas would save us from ourselves. but thats obviously not the case. They dont give two s about you or anyone you love. You are a $ to them and only that. Even when it comes to health you are still a $ to them. If you are not sick, you are not making them money. So guess what, they create out of thin air. "Does your leg not stand still. well go on zoloft or what ever else bull and you will be cured".
get the money out of politics!!!
so the next time you say its our fault... well yes it is. But there was a plan all along to make you do what you did. |

This is about much more than the Western world, and it's certainly about more than money. |

The government deregulated the out of the mortgage system and let financial institutes run wild with the offers. Like zero down on homes, the obvious sub prime rates etc etc. This made the price of owning property absolutely sky rocket to the point that it wasn't about people taking out loans they couldn't afford. It became our family needs a house that was $200k 5 years ago but is now $300k which we can't afford. So now they're stuck with paying the $100k that they can't handle. And yes you can say well they could live in a crapier area, put 2 kids in a bedroom etc but when you have a family and the money is easily borrowable, you're going to spend what you need to provide properly for the family.
I absolutely agree with you that people are pointing the finger at the system and not considering themselves partially at fault. But likewise you are pointing the finger solely at the people when reality is that it's a mix of both.
Bottomline in my books is you can count on corporations and a good chunk of the population being greedy. The "system" needs to take that into consideration but unfortunately the Americans are so in favour of capitalism they consider those required regulations nothing but roadblocks to a good life when in reality the opposite is true (as they are now learning). |
