Occupy Toronto eviction order stands, court rules

from one part of the article

Judge Brown, however, said their freedom of speech could be conveyed without the use of tents or overnight stays.

“Protesters have ample means left to express their message, including continued use of the park (but no structures or “midnight hours”), and other Torontonians can resume their use of the park,” he wrote in the 54-page ruling.

The protesters are simply breaking the law, Judge Brown said in his decision.

“The Charter does not permit the protesters to take over public space without asking, exclude the rest of the public from enjoying their traditional use of that space, and then contend that they are under no obligation to leave.”

thanks yohan. exactly. police took lawful action to ensure protestors complied with the court's ruling. nothing to see here.

as above; police don't punish. they enforce.

Enforcement by using excessive force isn't something that should be overlooked and treated lightly. Especially because of those "dirty protesters". :p

As for lawful action, if it was lawful to use pepperspray in such a manner then maybe the laws should be changed slightly (just as was done I think with the tazer situation with that poor guy in Vancouver).

agreed. and if it is determined that police over-reached or used excessive force, im sure there will be ramifications.

perhaps. the thing with all the new "less lethal" options developed over the last 2 or 3 decades is that we're more likely to see such tools being used. however since i wasn't there, and am unfamiliar with canadian police regulations, i cannot claim to be sure the cops went too far based on a short youtube video.

haha, the artist is hopelessly optimistic here imo. i mean, if "public sentiment" was really waiting in the wings we wouldn't be seeing a handful of scruffy kids gets sprayed by The Man, we'd be seeing massive, full-scale action with cities full of people. the movement has had more than a month to mobilise, what is "public sentiment" doing exactly, biding its time?

this though, is brilliant. hahaha.

spraying pepper spray is in no way a "punishment" for an infraction of justice. the police are well within their authority to use pepper spray (or other tools) to encourage compliance with the law. that's all this was.

argument from incredulity noted.

Since it's pretty clear you're just trying to stir the pot and get a rise out of me, I'll say good one and let you continue your parade ;)

negative; they are my honest opinions re the parts from you i quoted. the police don't punish, and were not punishing protestors with the capsicum spray.

Ah, to live in a linear reality. Must be pimpin ;)

Glad they are not camping in the park any longer. Seems hypocritical to be breaking the law to get a point across about how everyone else is the bad guy.

lol those pissed me off large. But I don't think it's fair to compare peacefully camping in a park to storming the Gardiner and throwing bikes 70 ft to the ground off the side (with children in the group no doubt).

im not quite sure what you mean. if you mean its good living in a world where words have clearly defined meanings which can't be altered to suit one's argument, then yeah, it is pretty pimpin'.
