In other news the US is trying to pass a new bill. So if you are a foreigner and looking to buy a place in the states, spending over $500k you would be eligible to receive a US Visa. In all honesty, not sure why anyone would want a US Visa. Seeing you will be forced to start paying taxes in the US on your worldwide income. Don't get me wrong, I like the US, but I don't like it that much, that I have to help them with their debt problems.

True with the US Visa you could live in the states and work. It just not worth the hassle having to deal with another tax agency.

As such, perhaps the devil's advocate can take a rest for a bit. There's a time for academic speculation and thought experiments. Then there's a time to go into the real world and have honest discussions about what's really happening and what needs to be done.

As a manufacturing entrepreneur, my live revolves around the word "innovation". Innovation is how we do good business, and we're dead without it.

BUT, I sure as don't bet YOUR life on MY experiments. I don't bet my life either. INCREMENTAL IMPROVEMENTS with lots of discussion, thought experiments, and counter-argument BEFORE we start ordering machinery, materials, patents, outside consultants, etc. The people who repealed Glass-Steagall (et al), and I mean the actual persons involved, got really god damn rich - as did their buddies who run the banks. They bet YOUR life on THEIR experiment. that and devil's advocate. All is not equal here. These issues could have (and were) predicted. It only took a decade to destroy scores of lives, useful and functional corporations, decades of innovation and success.

I didn't say you, in particular, were making generalizations. However, what should be clear by the majority of replies throughout posts here and elsewhere is that most are.

Perhaps you think the time for devils advocate has passed. That's fine. I'm actually quite interested in this topic and am not merely "playing devils advocate", nor am I just stirring the pot. Other people are reading these posts who might appreciate contrasting viewpoints and clarification.

I would certainly not agree that the time for thought experiment is ever over-done. After all, we're sitting here on a message board which is designed to contain discussions (rarely on such topics of such gravity). This is one giant thought exercise, and before major decisions are made, giant thought exercises are required and should be encouraged. People need to think more critically before talking about issues in general, and if through discussions like these, people are opened to new points of view - well, I think that's fantastic.

And perhaps you don't bet my life in your own experiments In all likelihood, you never will. However, one day - if your business is wildly successful - you will have thousands of employees under your wing. Perhaps you'll be fortunate enough to have all of your ideas work out to their benefit. Perhaps not. Maybe you'll work until the end of your days with altruism. Perhaps not. Ascendant levels of success have a way of influencing us all in the most subliminal of ways.

Anyways man - if you're not interested in considering my viewpoint, then disregard it. That's the good part about message board discussions ;)

Just watched this lady on The Daily Show. Her book is about how companies basically have used up the pensions of their employees to coat the pockets of the executives and now pensions can't be paid out. This is also part of why people are protesting. Imagine working somewhere for 40 years and finding out the money you have been paying into the pension is gone.

This is not a good point, by any means.

You don't know too many "rich" people, do you?

While your image of the stereotypical rich person sitting around twiddling their thumbs may play well into whatever reality you're creating for yourself, it certainly doesn't hold any weight on observations I've made on several individuals with over 25 million dollar in combined assets (and well beyond the 100 million dollar mark in some cases)- all of whom hustle hard for the money they've earned. In fact, in every case, they continue to act exactly as they have when they did not have such wealth.

A quick survey of the richest individuals of the world will also reveal many who most certainly do not "twiddle their thumbs".

Sure, there are plenty of trust fund babies around the world for whom this may not be the case, but your errant generalization seems more based on "sureality" shows and is exactly that - an error.

OMG, way to read into a one statement on a message board. i never said that ALL RICH PEOPLE twiddle their thumbs. in my opinion, a lot of people that i would consider rich, do all for their money. of course there are many that have worked for it. and those people that you speak of, would probably tell you the same thing as this "it's not how hard you work, it's how smart you work."

I saw her interview on Jon Stewart a couple weeks ago...the stuff these companies are getting away with is mind-boggling

Insurance costs too much, the government should regulate it and it should only cost a dollar a month, and we should get a 13 dollar refund at the end of the year if we don't crash.

Nahhh, that's no fair to the precious snowflake corporations!!

Rather, the government instead of regulating the insurance companies should instead regulate the public - force them to buy insurance or else! Because why shouldn't it work one way and not the other!

That was brutal to listen to!

So what is going on with the protests in Toronto the last week or so? Haven't heard much about them at all.
