Looking out for both its self interests AND those its services instead of just only its own interests.
Other than the GFC though I don’t see a systemic problem with corporations ignoring the interests of those they service. These businesses are so powerful because they were better at servicing those needs than their competitors. Of course they don’t give two s about the interests of those they don’t service, which I think is the more common problem (environmental issues especially). But certainly there needs to be legislative tools in place to enable governments to punish/reform businesses that are doing the wrong thing.

Personal responsibility goes hand in hand with corporate responsibility IMO. ;)
Absolutely, but we shouldn’t exaggerate the responsibilities of either. Just because there’s a negative outcome for someone doesn’t mean the act itself is inherently wrong.

I think they are trying to protest over the Brooklyn Bridge again (that's just asking to be arrested imo)

That's assuming "we" have that much influence, which "we" don't. Money talks, and at the end of the day it's the corporations with millions of dollars for lobbyists that have the influence and get to shape the system, not "us"
And another thing: hindsight is 20/20...we can't really say what will work for certain until we try it. This system has been working for a while, but it's obvious now that revisions need to be made.
I can't say that I agree with this one (on the first part). Sure, they may influence the direction of the system, but it is us as a mass that provides the fodder to feed the beast - and as such, we have an incredible amount of power. Simple redirection of funds would quickly wipe out many of these "superpowers".
Everything is connected. I agree totally with your more moderate second point.

Not surprising that things are turning this way - the sitting in parks message isn't making any change. I'm sure this is only the beginning...

I came across this quote today from a letter of a reader of National Post
quote:
If I saw the Occupy movement as a focused challenge to governments to get serious about regulating the finance industry, I would be out there waving a sign.
it sums up my sentiments about OWS precisely.

Barack Obama said this of the protests in Egypt;
"I want to be very clear in calling upon the Egyptian authorities to refrain from any violence against peaceful protesters.
The people of Egypt have rights that are universal. That includes the right to peaceful assembly and association, the right to free speech, and the ability to determine their own destiny. These are human rights. And the United States will stand up for them everywhere."

Dude I'm not surprised one bit. They condemn nations for something, and then they turn around and do the same thing.
