That's what I mentioned before .... some will use Voip, all the uneducated people won't know what the hell it is. At least its better then everyone talkin' on the phone. |

That will be a while, after Bell and rogers stop disrupting VOIP traffic on their networks. VOIP is sooooo cheap right now, and there is absolutely no reason for anybody to have a traditional land line.
- $70 for a VOIP ATA (modem)
- $10/month for kick ass service.
You would start saving money after 3-4 months, and enjoy way more features, and free long distance in North America. |

Um...so In Mississauga, switched from Bell to Acanac. Before I left bell, I noticed I was getting http downloads around 1MBps, which I thought was odd, and chalked it up to unreliable stats.
Now I have been with Acanac for a month, and just did an internal speed test and got:
Last Result:
Download Speed: 13407 kbps (1675.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 587 kbps (73.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Yes, you see that right. I have no idea what is going on, but my speeds just went nuts! I am still being throttled hard, but at least web downloads are fast.
According to Acanac, they have entered into a agreement with TecSavvy to install their own equipment at the switching offices, to offer new DSL on their own terms, and off of Bell's network. They are trying to offer 20Mbps service for next year, and even IPTV! |

do you have a Dry-Loop with your connection and if so is it worth it? i don't have a landline where i live but I'd like to get off Rogers and want to avoid Bell DSL

Internal tests should not be used to test speed.
The speed to the CO is not what makes a connection fast (it is only a single factor). A heck of a lot depends on routing, provider's pipe, network capacity, etc.
A more reliable measure is you to a variety of external-network servers. |

I used to have dry-loop with Acanac, an extra $7/month. If you sign up for the full year, then you are only spending $27/month for the first year anyways. So you are still saving huge. After the first year it will go back to $40/month + $7 for dry loop.
If you want to switch, I would do it very quickly. Bell has instituted new bandwidth rules for resellers: old customers will continue to get unlimited downloading, new customers (as of Jan '09) will be limited to 60GB/month.

Agreed. That is why I mentioned I was getting 1MBps+ from other http sources as well. So it is most certainly confirmed. |

Very interesting thread. Paul is the owner/admin at Acanac, and is very open on the forums. I suggest you read the entire thread, for all the info, as it is posted over a few months. The thread also has info on Acanac's upgrades, and future plans. |

BTW - if you are already with Bell, or have a DSL modem, you don't have to get Acanac's. Pretty much any ADSL modem will do. My acanac one was not working, and I called in for some tech help, and he just told me to use my old Bell modem; popped in the new username/password, and worked instantly. I think I even have a couple old ones laying around, lol. |
