Rogers To Release 15GB Data Plan, Empties Your Wallet
Beginning June 16, 2009, all new and existing Rogers Wireless customers are eligible for a new Data Plan. The plan includes 15GB of Data and runs for $150 per month. It is primarily geared towards seriously heavy data users and the Rogers Mobile Internet Stick.

In March 2008 Bell started throttling its Wholesale Customers (TekSavvy among a group of many) without notice. We attempted to have the CRTC force Bell to stop as it removed our ability to do business and give Market choice. The throttling was done in the name of congestion, even if Bell, at the same time launched higher speeds (which they did not share with their wholesalers) and also dabbled with launching IPTV, which consumes even more capacity.
The CRTC sided with Bell in November 2008 but launched a Public Hearing to discuss Network Management Practices, clearly showing they made a decision on throttling without having all the details in hand to do so. As a result we launched a request to reverse their decision from November (The Review & Vary) in May 2009.
The only way we are going to make a difference at this point is to get full public support to stop companies like Bell from bullying the market and the regulators! The Telecom and Cableco Monopolies control 96% of our marketplace, so if we don't stand up and voice our concerns, this will become a two party dance where choices and services are going to be completely removed and rates raised to unreasonable levels!

Palm to disclose UK Pre launch details next week?
We heard way back at CES that a GSM Pre was in the works, but not until now have we heard who exactly in the world would be using it. According to confirmation received by T3, Palm is gearing up to disclose the whos, whats and wheres behind the UK launch next week, meaning that we've got seven days (give or take) to twiddle our thumbs until we know which carrier (O2 or Vodafone, most likely), how much and when it'll be available for purchase. We know it's agonizing, but at least you've a time frame to circle in your Trapper Keeper now, right?
The Pre gets PlayStation gaming and more thanks to ZodTTD (video)
If you're familiar with the emulation scene (and let's be honest, you are reading Engadget), then you know the name ZodTTD -- the brain behind some of the best jailbroken emus for the iPhone, including variations on the PlayStation, Game Boy Advance, and most importantly... the TurboGrafx-16. Now the master-hacker has brought his goods to the Pre, cooking up a version of psx4all on the Palm device, with the aforementioned GBA and TG16 ports on the way! Interestingly, he reports that the performance on the Pre is actually better than that of the iPhone 3GS, and of course he's hacked access to the keyboard, allowing for (more) proper control of games. There are still kinks that are being worked out (sound emulation, screen scaling, etc.), but it looks like we can expect big things in the near future. We at Engadget know everyone will rest a bit easier tonight knowing that real gaming on the Pre is at hand. We'll hopefully be getting our hands on a version soon, but for now hit the read link for more info, and check out the full video after the break!

Employee Shot at Clarendon Apple Store
At least two employees were inside the store at the Clarendon Market Common in the 2700 block of Clarendon Boulevard after it opened at 10 a.m., police said. Someone rang the doorbell at the back door at about 10:15 a.m., and a 26-year-old female employee opened it.
The gunman apparently opened fire right away, striking the victim in the shoulder.
"One of the employees went back to the rear entrance, and the other employee heard a loud bang," Arlington County police Detective Crystal Nosal said.
Police are searching the area via helicopter and with K-9 units for a culprit described as a black man in his late 20s or early 30s about 6-feet tall with a medium build and some type of facial hair.
The back door generally is used for deliveries.
Nothing appears to have been taken from the store.
The employee is said to have non-life threatening injuries.
"We are shocked by this senseless act of violence and our thoughts are with our coworker and her family during her recovery," Apple spokeswoman Amy Bessette said.

What is it?
The Sony Ericsson XPERIA Rachael is a forthcoming smartphone from SE, powered by Google's Android operating system (!) and a processor that's considered gaudily powerful at this stage of the smartphone game in Qualcomm's 1GHz Snapdragon.
It comes bearing a 3.5 headphone jack, graphics acceleration, and a colossally-large (purported) 4-inch touchscreen that should accomodate even the fattest of fingers.
I love to get overzealous about this , but barring any major ups from Sony Ericsson (which will very likely occur!) the XPERIA Rachael is my near-perfect smartphone and an easy pick for 2009 device of the year.

Qualcomm's Snapdragon is the king of cellphone-sized processors for the moment. It runs at 1 GHz which is pretty much unheard of for these CPUs. More megahertz doesn't always mean more better, but it's generally held pretty true for smartphones. Most of HTC's current (Touch Diamond, Touch Pro, Magic, Dream) runs on a Qualcomm chip @ 528 MHz, the iPhone 3G runs on a Samsung chip @ 412 MHz, the super-speedy iPhone 3G S runs on a 600 MHz chip, and Nokia's smartphones tend to run the gamut from 369 MHz to 424 MHz in the underwhelming N97.

The phone will obviously work just fine on T-Mobile and AT&T's 2G networks (voice/SMS/EDGE data) but the pertinent question is 3G support. We don't have a formal announcement yet, but Sony Ericsson has a very good track record for AT&T customers: the Aino, Idou, W995a, C905a, XPERIA X1, and K850 all had support for AT&T's 3G data network and are all sold unlocked and compatible with AT&T's $15/month data option. We can confidently assume this will be, too.
T-Mobile UMTS/HSDPA support is unlikely since T-Mobile's 3G is on a "proprietary" frequency. SE may hook T-Mo customers up, but it doesn't seem likely.

It looks like SE has gotten serious about competing and really dialed back the Sony-influenced connectivity ridiculousness. The phone charges and syncs with a standard miniUSB cable just like all recent HTCs/Motos/others, and has a standard headphone jack so you don't have to buy some ty adapter or convince yourself that you're deaf and A2DP sounds good.
Recent SE phones haven given up the ghost on that head Sony memory card format and use microSD, we assume the XPERIA Rachael will too.

It stacks up very favorably against the iPhone. The Rachael has a larger screen and a much larger resolution, and I personally prefer Android over iPhone OS just for the wonderful push Gmail experience with a PC-like conversation threading view. On paper it looks faster than the 3GS, but it may end up performing about the same in practice: it's going to be pushing a lot more pixels with that extra horsepower. Sony's UI additions to Android may or may not be any good, but hopefully we can disable them and just use a "stock" Android experience if they're ty.
That said, the iPhone has a lot of immediate perks. iPhone OS has a ton of apps available, and at least some of them are good! Android has some cool choices too, but the selection's just not there yet and the gaming choices are by comparison. I joked about it in another thread, but a stupid addictive arcade homerun derby game is keeping me hopelessly glued to my iPhone right now and it's going to be a bummer if we don't have any fun 3D games for this phone. The iPhone also packs a great Skype client, gapless audio playback, and a tough-to-scratch glass touchscreen which are huge perks for me personally.
Still, it's a chicken and egg type of problem. Android needs more apps to get more devices and marketshare, but nobody's writing apps because of the limited marketshare and previously devices. An attractive phone without those ugly-ass HTC "chins" could boost the perception of the platform, and a blazing fast processor with graphics acceleration will give developers some meat to work with.
The phone will also save your $360 per two years over an iPhone because of AT&T's forced iPhone premium data pricing. That won't do us enough good if SE s us around and tries to sell this thing for $950 or some , though. :)

As users in our Bell Canada forums explore, Bell Canada has decided to lower the caps (and in some cases speeds) on their DSL services for new users. Bell Canada's "Performance" tier has gone from 7Mbps to 6Mbps and seen its cap reduced from 60GB per month to 25GB per month. Bell Canada's 2Mbps "Essential Plus" tier has seen its cap reduced from 20GB to just 2GB per month. In a particularly curious move, our users note that Bell has also added "Usage Insurance" that provides users additional cap space in forty GB increments (up to 120GB) for an additional $5 per month. Users who don't sign up for this "insurance" will wind up paying between $2 and $2.50 per gigabyte in overage charges.
Nokia cuts market share targets as Q2 profits plummet
Ok Nokia, this is getting serious. The world's largest cellphone maker just announced a 66 percent yearly drop in Q2 profit while lowering its 2009 market share target for its cellphones. Originally, Nokia had expected market share to rise in 2009, presumably based on a successful launch of the N97 flagship device. However, outside of a core group of S60 diehards, the N97 has been universally panned in both reviews and user forums alike. And with nothing but rumors of an Atom-based Nokia netbook on the immediate horizon, well, let's just say that we're suddenly concerned about the health of our friends from Espoo.
