who activate by August 31 on a three year contract, a data-only offering of 6GB of data for $30 per month is being made available that can be added to any in-market voice plan. I think Rogers/Fido have finally hit a homerun with the iPhone, considering you can use your current voice plan...

yeah various rumors on blogs, in the press, etc. have suggested that they've been forced to make an about face on the issue. Though don't expect any 'unlimited' data plans soon as a result of it either.

well for one thing, I read that Rogers is also the only provider in the world that offers the phone on a 3 year contract. Some countries actually prohibit wireless providers from issuing anything greater than a 2 year contract.

still no unlimited data, and this offer is only for activations prior to August 31st., but it seems like Rogers is reacting to all the negative publicity by putting a 'band-aid' on the problem to appease early adopters. Check out the areas highlighted in yellow.
You really gotta wonder the choice of words.. you can almost smell their arrogance and contempt of the new age consumer

Rogers Communications Inc. has thrown a bone to potential iPhone customers by offering a limited-time promotional data rate plan that should silence complaints about Canadian pricing for the eagerly-anticipated device.
The wireless giant said today it would give iPhone subscribers who sign up before Aug. 31 the option of purchasing a 6-gigabyte data plan for $30 per month in addition to any voice plan.
While that still doesn’t match the unlimited data plans offered in the United States by AT&T Inc., the promotion offers significantly better value than the rate plans Rogers unveiled earlier this month.
Under that pricing model, the cheapest plan offered just 400 megabytes of data, 150 minutes of weekday talk time and unlimited evenings and weekends for $60 per month plus fees and taxes.
The plans immediately sparked protest in some quarters of the Internet from users who argued the iPhone’s focus on mobile Web browsing and multimedia would quickly propel users over their caps, leaving with hefty overage charges at the end of each month.
John Boynton, the senior vice-president and chief marketing officer of Rogers Wireless, said in an interview the promotional offer is in response to customer concerns.
“We’re responding to our customers that gave us a lot of feedback,” he said, adding that rumours about a spat with Apple over pricing or a limited supply of iPhones were false.
He said Rogers is expecting record sales following the iPhone’s launch on Friday at six Rogers stores across the country, including a Rogers store on Dundas St. in Toronto.
“This will be best-selling phone in Canadian history.”
He added that the 6-gigabyte promotional offer won’t be limited to the iPhone, but will be available on all devices that run on Rogers third generation, or 3G, wireless network. That includes the soon-to-be launched BlackBerry Bold.
Boynton said existing price plans for the iPhone will go back into effect Sept. 1.
“What we’re trying to do is satisfy a very small group of people, the early adopters,” he said. “When those customers are done, we’re back to our basic user.”
Meanwhile, rivals Bell Canada Inc. and Telus Corp. have stepped into a pricing controversy of their own after telling customers they would be charged 15 cents for every text message they receive beginning next month.
At present, subscribers are only charged for outgoing text messages. Users who opt for a plan that includes text messaging won’t be affected.
The phone companies say the move is necessary because of the explosive growth in the popularity of text messaging among Canadians.
While the change would put the Canadian carriers in line with U.S. wireless operators that charge 20 cents per message, some are complaining that it’s a cash grab and that subscribers will be unfairly penalized for cell phone spam.

According to this you can now get 6GB of data for $30. This 6GB is not IMEI restricted so you can use it on your unlocked gray market phones. You can do whatever you want with it - WAP, tethering, YouTube, etc. Hurray!
The post says it’s for Fido but apparently it will be on Rogers too. Just remember you have to sign a 3 year contract.

There will never be an unlimited data plan. Other providers don't have one either, they just call it unlimited under the 'fair use' policy. So one disguises it, the other calls it what it is. I think it's pretty fair. |

you're right .. in fact I think the whole 'fair use' policy really started to be enforced around the time that CityFido was launched and some customers had literally been spending hundreds of hours a month on the phone.
wonder if carriers in the US and other parts of the world impose a similar policy on usage. I checked AT&T's site but couldn't find anything in their fine print listed for the iPhone 3G plans.

Oh man 6GB for $30? Thats $5/gig. For your home connection you pay $45 for 60GB, which is $0.75/gig. That's about 7x the price. I guess if having youtube where ever you go is that important to you, its your money!
I understand one is wireless and one is wired, but I am just amazed people are willing to spend that kind of money. If you are a business person, or if your company is paying for your data so you can work, its great. But the average consumer's life has not changed so dramatically that they need to be connected on the go everywhere.
So the saying is true: 'if you build it, they will come'. |

Just to let you guys know, right now Rogers has one of (if not THE) best data rates in the world right now.
AT&T in the US has $30 Unlimited Data, except that it has a soft cap of 5GB.
I'm not sure what the cap is for the UK carriers, but Rogers definitely has one of the most competitive rates for data usage. PS, you can tether on this plan!
The only major issue is that this is only a limited promotion until the end of August and not permanent.

Jim Prentice issued a statement saying he doesn't want to interfere in the operations of two private companies but has "serious concerns" that they will begin charging customers 15 cents for text messages they receive starting next month.
Bell plans to levy the new charge starting Aug. 8. Telus will follow suit Aug. 24.
"I do have a duty as Minister of Industry, when necessary, to protect the interests of the consuming public," Prentice wrote in a statement. "I believe this was an ill-thought-out decision."
One of the chief concerns is that cell-phone users, particularly the young, will be charged for spam text messages that they receive.
According to the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association, an average of 45.3-million text messages are sent by Canadians each day.
Spokespeople for the two firms have said that customers can contact them to have charges for spam messages deleted from their bills. Heavy text message users also have the option of signing up for a special plan that could reduce overall costs.
Prentice has sent letters to the chief executives of the two companies asking for a meeting before the new charges come into effect Aug. 8 to explain the decision "with a view to finding a solution that provides the best service to consumers at the best price."
