Oh , I forgot about this ... my GF's on a corp account and this is how she got her iPhone.

1) Go to Woodside Square (Finch & McCowan), there's a Roger's Dealer there called AM CAll ... but it's still Rogers.

2) Do a HUP from there and your pricing will be
-$249.99 (no data plan) + $35.00 Activation blah blah blah that cant be waived

This works 100%.

Palm Pre Webcast Tidbit: Browser Nearly 4x Faster than iPhone (Updated with video)

As it stands, the best shot you have at a "full" web browsing experiencing is with Apple's iPhone. Granted, Opera Mini ain't half bad, and Fennec (er, Mobile Firefox, holds a lot of promise, but it's hard to argue with the sheer performance numbers associated with Safari. That said, it looks like Cupertino has its work cut out for it upon the release of Palm's Pre. During a recent webcast, viewers were treated to a sneak peek at the Pre loading up Big12Sports.com. Said site is pretty intensive to load, and even on WiFi it takes well over 20 seconds to completely pull up on Apple's darling. The site took around eight seconds to finalize on the Pre, suggesting that it either has a wicked fast browser or caching abilities, both of which we could learn to appreciate. Hit the read link for a peek at the video, because -- you know -- seeing is believing.

New iPod shuffle requires headphones with an authentication chip

The folks over at iLounge stumbled upon some curious info regarding the new iPod Shuffle that has us scratching our heads. We all know the controls for the new Shuffle are on the headphones, but apparently Cupertino decided to make it even more difficult for headphone makers to get in on some Shuffle action. Control of playback and adjustment of volume will not be permitted unless the headphones used are equipped with an Apple authentication chip. D’oh! To further complicate matters, headphones with this new authentication chip are not yet available. Phooey, you say, I will pair my high-end headphones with a third party remote control device instead. Denied! Third party remotes with this authentication chip are not yet available either. Until these new accessories hit the market, shuffle owners are stuck using the stock headphones for the time being. What is Apple’s reasoning behind the move? We’re not sure, though we imagine it has to do with ensuring Apple can prevent companies from producing Shuffle gear without its blessing. Good job Apple, now it’ll cost less-than-scrupulous manufacturers overseas an extra 7¢ per unit to make compatible headphones. Major fail.

THE CANADIAN PRESS

Shares in Rogers Communications Inc. gained nearly six per cent in morning trading following a report that the company has chosen its new chief executive officer.

Rogers stock is up $1.68 at $29.97 after the Globe and Mail newspaper said Nadir Mohamed will step into the CEO role left vacant last December when company founder Ted Rogers died.

Mohamed has spent almost nine years with the company, including a stint as head of its key wireless division.

While the decision hasn't been made official by Rogers, it's expected to be finalized internally and announced within the next two weeks.

The company is also planning reportedly planning to give Rogers' son Edward Rogers a key position that would allow him to work alongside Mohamed in a role that would focus on strategic moves like acquisitions.

Calls to Rogers (TSX: RCI.B) for comment on the rumours were not returned on Monday morning.

Rogers changes minimum HUP length from 12 to 24 months for smartphone users

It looks like Canada’s Rogers Wireless wasn’t content with merely jacking up its BlackBerry prices as it has just gone and made and a decision that is sure to aggravate plenty of smartphone customers. Normally, a Rogers customer is eligible for a Hardware Upgrade Program (HUP) discount every 12 months, allowing them to get a brand new phone with three-year contract pricing (with as much as an extra $100 plus a $35 administration fee added on top or as little as $25 taken off depending on how much a customer spent since his/her last HUP). Now however, the minimum term has been bumped up to 24 months. Some would argue this is what you get when you’re playing with branded and subsidized phones, but to others this is a pretty massive slap in the face. From the looks of these Rogers scoops we’ve been getting over the past few days, it seems like we have a whole bunch of ‘adjustments’ to look forward to thanks to that little $30 million blunder. Hit the jump for the full internal bulletin posted to Sales Central along with a screen shot. Not cool, Rogers.

**IMPORTANT UPDATE** Change to Hardware Upgrade Eligibility

The Hardware Upgrade Program (HUP) allows eligible customers to upgrade to leading edge data devices. Beginning March 17, the minimum eligibility tenure rule is changing from 12 months to 24 months for customers who wish to upgrade their smartphone and are currently on a data plan or Voice & Data Package.

This follows the March 13 price increase for BlackBerry® devices and reinforces the importance of explaining to customers that HUP eligibility and quoted hardware/plan pricing are subject to change and cannot be guaranteed beyond the time of quotation.

Update to HUP eligibility:

The updated HUP eligibility rule of 24 months minimum tenure since customer’s last upgrade or activation date will be system enforced and no exceptions will be allowed.

12 months eligibility tenure rule remains unchanged for voice-only customers upgrading to a data device.

12 months eligibility tenure rule remains unchanged for customers upgrading from a non-smartphone to a smartphone or data device.

All other standard HUP eligibility rules still apply.

Reasons for the update to the HUP program:

Rogers Wireless heavily invests in providing the latest data devices at affordable prices to our data customers. This update to the Hardware Upgrade Program is designed to achieve cost efficiency in order to continue offering our customers an outstanding selection of the most advanced data devices for the best value.

Along with the growth in popularity of data devices there has also been an improved level of quality and technology that has gone into the line-up over the past years allowing a longer hardware lifespan.

Customer impacts:

Please always check the customer’s account in Vision21 for HUP eligibility to ensure the customer is provided with correct eligibility information.

Customers may have been eligible and now eligibility has been pushed out as a result of the update.

Customers may have been aware of their eligibility prior to the update, but did not take advantage of the program at the time and are currently not eligible as a result of the update.

Positioning:

Rogers Wireless sells devices at a significantly lower price than that which we pay the manufacturer. This update to our Hardware Upgrade Program is necessary in order to allow us to continue offering the best devices at the best value in a fair timeframe for our customers.
The Hardware Upgrade Program eligibility and hardware prices are subject to change without notice.

Please note that the information in this bulletin applies to the standard HUP program, and does not take into consideration any existing promotions that may require different eligibility. Always remember to consult the Sales Central bulletins to read the latest in HUP offers.

Thank you for your continued support.

Free Press Group Presses FCC to Back Skype on iPhone

By AMY SCHATZ

WASHINGTON – The open-Internet advocacy group Free Press asked the Federal Communications Commission Friday to investigate whether Apple Inc. and AT&T Inc. are violating federal rules by blocking the use of a new low-cost Skype voice service on Apple iPhones that use AT&T's 3G network.

Since its release on Tuesday, Skype's iPhone service has quickly become the most popular software application at Apple's App Store. Skype users can call each other for free or can place calls to traditional landline and mobile phones for a small fee.

Free Press, which has a history of attacking efforts by cable and wireless companies to limit the uses of their networks, could open up a broader review of the ways in which wireless companies control the use of their networks.

Wireless providers, such as Clearwire Corp., have successfully argued they should be able to prevent customers from using some bandwidth-hogging Internet services, like file-sharing, because their wireless networks have capacity issues.

Restrictions on the Skype voice service's use by wireless carriers aren't limited to the U.S. Deutsche Telekom AG, Apple's exclusive network provider in Germany, said Thursday it may prevent its T-Mobile customers in Europe from using the Skype service on its iPhones – even on Wi-Fi networks.

Even if Skype users could use AT&T's 3G network, it wouldn't necessarily save them much money, except on international calls. AT&T requires iPhone users to subscribe to bundled voice and data services, so the cost savings for customers using Skype would be limited.

Free Press and other consumer advocates want the FCC to affirm that so-called net neutrality protections also cover wireless networks. That would prevent AT&T or other operators from blocking services like Skype on their mobile networks.

With a Democratic administration in charge at the FCC, the views of open network advocates could get a more sympathetic hearing. U.S. President Barack Obama announced his support for net neutrality, or the idea that all Internet traffic should be treated equally and consumers should be able to use whatever Internet services they want, during the campaign. The president's choice for FCC chairman, Julius Genachowski, is also a strong net neutrality supporter.

The Free Press complaint centers on the fact that iPhone users can't use Skype's new iPhone service on AT&T's 3G network. Apple, which has an exclusive deal in the U.S. with AT&T, says iPhone users can only use Skype's service at Wi-Fi hot spots.

Free Press contends that's a violation of federal Internet principles, which prohibit providers from blocking consumers' access to legal services.

A spokesman for AT&T didn't not have immediate comment on the complaint.

Free Press was also behind a complaint that led the FCC to sanction Comcast Corp. for its practice of blocking some users from using file-sharing software services. Comcast has appealed the FCC action to a federal appeals court, where the case is pending.
