yeah when i went dark i dyed my hair coffee brown and it looked BLACK - ok not really but pretty fuking dark. Took a few months of washing (1-2) but now u can barely tell the difference between virgin hair (been close to 2 years of not dying it) and the dyed hair.

Something else I would suggest if you colour your hair seasonally is to use semi-permanent dye instead. Obviously you get the benefit of not committing to permanent change, but semi permanent dye is a lot less harsh on your hair.

Depends on the hair type, mines fine and dead straight so I've found if I wash it the night before with plenty of conditioner it holds better with just a tiny bit of hairspray (and I've tried just about every way of doing it!) Its the only way it works, however, girlfriend when I do hers, she has thicker hair with a slight natural wave that will hold a curl without any real treatment or cleaning.

Definitely DON'T attempt to lighten it if you don't really know what you're doing. It will fade quickly anyway, and then you can just tone it the correct colour. If you want to speed up the fading process, use baby shampoo. Despite it being gentle for babies, it actually rapes the out of your hair. So buy a good conditioner (this is how I sped up the process of going red to blonde). :p

Thanks, will do. I washed my hair earlier today and it seemed like it lightened up quite a bit.

Basically, this is the hair color I ended up with. It was supposed to be dark blond, but I am slowly getting used to the color:

Thanks! Like I said it is much darker than I wanted, but I'm slowly starting to ease into it. I used to have my hair much darker when I lived in Denmark.
