| I can't imagine what I'd feel like if I were a Frenchman right now. To have a national hero and saviour like Zidane do that is pretty remarkable. But he did lead them to two international titles so once the anger has subsided, everyone will remember his glory days. |

| according to FIFA's site, the general consensus is that the French aren't the least bit concern or upset with Zidane's actions and still have the utmost respect for him |

In my experience of French people (I'm marrying one), I think that of all the countries in the world, the one that is the most perfectly suited to handle an action like Zidane's is France.
In my year of living and working there, I found French people to be very rational and Cartesian. Things either make logical sense or they don't and if they don't, French people don't waste any time on it.
The French coach said to remember Zidane for all his achievements for France, and not for this one second. Very logical.
And regardless of what Materazzi said to him, the reaction does not equal the action, therefore I can picture broken French hearts, but at the same time turning away from the TV in disgust and moving on with their lives.
Lucky for Zidane, he doesn't play for Columbia:

lol... I'll take a Figo 'headbutt' over a Zidane running charge anyday.. I think he got ideas after watching the running of the bulls |
