Two Local Soccer Fans Charged After Flares Burn Woman And Field At Toronto FC Game
Thursday April 23, 2009
CityNews.ca Staff

Two Toronto soccer fans are in big trouble with police, after an incident at Wednesday's FC match at BMO Field downtown.

The stadium was packed with more than 19,000 fans watching the locals take on CHIVAS USA, when two flare torches suddenly came flying out of the stands.

One of the lit projectiles landed beside a woman trying to watch the game. It hit her thigh and burned right through her pants, causing a serious injury to her leg.

The other lit torch wound up on the field, igniting the artificial turf and leaving about $2,000 damage behind.

Police say two young adults were spotted attempting to flee the scene immediately after the fires, but were caught by authorities.

Cops allege each of the suspects threw a flare, and both are now facing the same charges.

Eighteen-year-old Andjelo Franjic and a 17-year-old who can't be named are accused of possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, assault with a weapon, and assault causing bodily harm

The older teen went before a judge at Old City Hall Thursday morning, while the younger accused made his first appearance in youth court on Jarvis St. Both are residents of Stoney Creek.

It's the second questionable incident involving Toronto soccer fans in a month. In late March, several FC fans were involved in a violent incident in Columbus, Ohio, with one being tasered by police in a fight caught on tape.

Good. What the hell were they thinking. Its a home game...why would you a) ruin your stadium by throwing flares, and more importantly b) do something that could injure other supporters?

I saw it as well, and they obviously were just trying to get it on the field and the wind caught it. But still wtf.

I got torched by a flare the other year. It was small, but it ing hurts. A lot. Went through my sweatshirt and caught my arm. Took a long time to heal and still have the scar.

(Edit: here's the pic)

I don't mind streamers and hell, even if a beer gets tossed onto the pitch it really isn't that big a deal, but flares? Retarded.

(Smoke is a different story. I'm all for smoke)

see...I've always wanted to bring a flare and light that off...and just let it floooow with goodness into the air...but if I did that I'd get tackled by cops and accused of being a terrorist hooligan goon..and now idiot kids like these 2 totally up with their stupid moves...i mean...WHY THROW IT ON A FAKE FIELD...WHY THROW IT IN THE STANDS....utter stupidity.
