As do all (I think) the people in this thread.

Honestly, I can't believe this thread, I have read it twice.

There is an awful lot of bleeding heart and 'woe for our people' but a seemingly blatant disregard for the rest of the world that this has happened to. What about the soldiers dying in the name of peacekeeping?

The passion in this thread, in my honest and purely unbiased opinion, is unfounded. Don't talk to me about the 'Fatherland' and tell me it doesn't translate. Songs about dying for your country ORIGINATED in England. Don't talk to me about patriotism, I feel it strongly too.

BUT

Remember the safe place in which you live and if you are Canadian, have some respect for the fact that you live in a cultural melting pot where difference of opinion is welcomed and we all live as harmoniously as we can with a mismatch of some of the most incompatible cultures in the world.

And the Queen on your bills and coins heads a nation that has seen way more brutality over it's history than you could ever imagine.

SO... Be nice, rejoice in your differences and hope that your families are safe.

again, not funny. last night 86 years old woman was beaten up by 3 kosovars. right now serbian houses are burning in kosovo and 240.000 serbs dont know what to do cause they have nowhere to go.

dont watch cnn, do some in depth research to really see whats going on

I've also seen a page recently that showed pictures of many Christian Orthodox churches in Kosovo that were destroyed wince 1999 - it showed pictures of those churches BEFORE they were destroyed and after (when many were just piles of rubble). But I cannot find it right now.

i don't think it is right for anyone to tell anyone else they don't understand the issue because they didn't live through it.

Based on that logic, the weight of experience is effectively lifted, and everyone's opinions count for the same?

quote:

i am not frustrated exactly. just disappointed. zokissima keeps on telling me that i don't understand, i just don't know, my opinion doesn't matter (neither does RJ's or EvilTree's). only his opinion matter is this case.

As for EvilTree, never said it does not matter. In fact I did tell him that I appreciate his objectivity, but pointed out that if you want to use it, you must apply it to a context sensitive to the history, not just objectively looking at the here and now.

YOu said your views, and I said why they are not exactly up to par with what was going on. Never said that your opinion doesn't matter. What is there to be disappointed at?

Oh, and English_Rachel, seriously, it was stated earlier in the thread that the 'attrocities' witnessed by the long-standing British empire just don't quite equate.

*sigh* Obviously the best thing to do is just to agree to disagree and leave this to sink to the depths of TA. There is just nothing new to be said, not by me, and not by any of you.

i know that you are trying to learn the whole history, but i think a better way would be to take what you learn and try to find solutions to fixing it.

lol, and i don't think brushing off people, "they just don't undertstand", is a valid comment.

i agree, and i take an interest in history from a standpoint of knowing what solutions to implement as a result of the mistakes made in the past, not in a who did what to who and bitching about how things are today

and yes, brushing people off because they don't understand is counterintuitive to our cause, we need to branch out and let people know whats happening in counties such as ours so things can change, being defensive about the issue wont help anybody

but like i said before, it is a sensitive topic, and you have to be more tactful and considerate when discussing such issues... you have to realize that many of the people on this board are here as a result of these issues and event that occurred not that long ago and the emotional wounds are still there

regardless, amidst all this flaming and confusion, im glad some dialog was established

very interesting insight there.. I don't understand why believing in something would make anyone want to kill or separate. If i had a choice in believing in something or believing in nothing,, i would choose nothing.. That way nobody could object to your views cause you have none!..

"I don't believe in anything, I don't hope in anything, I am free"
- I don't remember the name of the author of this quote, but it's the guy who wrote the book "The Greek Zorbas" (I'm too lazy to google up his name, but I know it's carved on his tombstone)

Funny, I picked up on the exact same thing with someone in this thread.

In any case, I've just been reading through as it interests me - not that I'll even pretend to be slightly educated on the topic. Anyone care to point me to some reading material perhaps? I don't want emotionally driven videos or anything - I'd like for it to be as objective (but 'real') as possible. It might be silly to ask for, but I'm just looking to be educated :)

I think that from a more broader perspective, Kosovo (and a lot of the Balkan area) is a big stake in worldwide geo-political relations... sort of like Korea was in the fifties during the Cold War. It is my observation, when you look at the recent events and evidence that has transpired recently after Kosovo declared independence - like which countries have accepted it as a sovereign state and which haven't - that this place is a hot spot. Russia and China have declared they'll never accept it as an independent state (for their own reasons), but the US and a lot of western-European nations have. I think they are also precluding Serbia's possible admission to the EU with some conditions relating to Kosovo, if I'm correct? Is it fair for me to assume that this whole issue is about more than just the local dispute within the population a certain territory/region declaring independence (and its neighbours coming to terms with that decision)?

Cuz i didnt understand what she meant by questions below...i mean i do understand what htey mean...but dont understand why she wrote them

I think they were rhetorical questions on her part, trying to make 8Wonders see why she is taking on emotional the stance that she is...

BTW, I think she didn't call him an idiot, as you translated - she said "you're not normal", which we use back home in my country too to express our disbelief when we think that what our conversational partner is saying is ridiculous or does not make sense... I guess in terms of the Canadian conversational etiquette it might not seem proper, but I think it does not have the same degree of insult as calling someone an idiot...

Why are people in the thread saying that they hate the U.S.? What's the U.S's role in all of this? or is it simply because they support and recognize Kosovo as a legitimate country now?
btw..thx for the translation :)

I think it might have something to do with the NATO-led bombing campaign against Yugoslavia in the spring of 1999, which was sort of driven by the US (the Clinton administration who was in power then) - but I'm not sure, it's my "educated guess" :D

Honestly, this is all soo bull but we can't avoid it either. I don't judge anyone because of their beliefs or religion or anything. I judge a person for who they are. I wish we could all do this.

I'm Turkish and I have many Greek friends, who are actually very nice and I played soccer with the guys. They are just like any of my other friends.

But it pisses me off when people start judging a country/religion/ethnicity based on one group of bad people... You can step on anywhere in the world, get used to it...

agreed :)
