Pro-Palestinian, pro-Israeli marchers face off on Yonge

January 04, 2009

STAFF REPORTER

Thousands of demonstrators waving signs and Palestinian flags marched in Toronto yesterday afternoon condemning Israel's attacks on Gaza as Israeli tanks and infantry began a massive ground offensive into the territory.

The air was tense as pro-Palestinian protesters of all ages gathered at Yonge and Dundas Square around 2 p.m. Across Yonge St. stood about 200 pro-Israel demonstrators.

Dozens of police on foot, horseback and bicycles monitored the two groups hurling insults at each other. Barriers set up down the middle of Yonge kept them apart.

"The attacks on Gaza are not acts of self-defence on Israel's part. They are the murder of innocent civilians, women and children," said Rafeef Ziadah, an organizer of yesterday's demonstration and a spokesperson for Palestine House, a group representing members of the GTA Palestinian community.

Similar protests were held in Ottawa, Montreal and Vancouver.

Traffic came to a standstill as the pro-Palestinian demonstrators, chanting "Free Palestine" from loudspeakers on the back of a pickup truck, marched two kilometres north on Yonge St. to the Israeli consulate on Bloor St. The pro-Israel group took a parallel route up Bay St. to the same destination.

"The argument that Israeli attacks are disproportionate is ridiculous," said Meir Weinstein, national director of the Jewish Defence League in Canada, walking north on Bay St. holding an Israeli flag. "We support the Israeli government's efforts to stop Hamas, stop terrorism and stop terrorist infrastructure."

Hussain Azraq, a wholesaler who came to Canada from the region 22 years ago, urged Prime Minister Stephen Harper not to be afraid to condemn the Israeli attacks.

Lawrence Cannon, Canada's foreign affairs minister, has expressed concern about the attacks, but the federal government says it believes Israel has a right to defend itself.

Azraq, 45, brought his four children. Son Mohammed, 9, said news of children dying in Gaza makes him "feel sore inside. "The children don't deserve to die because they're innocent people."

News of yesterday's ground invasion of Gaza arrived around 2 p.m. Toronto time, but organizers opted to delay the announcement until protesters arrived at the Israeli consulate an hour and a half later. The group then marched down University Ave. and burned Israeli and American flags before the U.S. consulate.

In the pro-Palestinian crowd were union and civil rights activists and a smattering of Jewish Canadians opposed to Israel's policies.

"We've got people here from almost every background supporting the cause. Our numbers are diverse," said Omar Hamid, 24, carrying a platform on which lay the effigy of a dead Palestinian child.

The video and images used in this article are a load of horse propaganda. You probably don't know, I'm just pointing it out as I cant let people think that's what it was like ;) It's the star people, you don't quote the star.

There were maybe 60 "Anti-protesters" holding Israeli flags and over 5500 protectors against Israel for Gaza... if you see the picture they chose to show as news to the public you will not see one Palestinian flag... WHAT? it was an Pro-Pali rally for the love of what you find holy!

This is what the protest was really like... I tried to get on top of a vantage point to get a couple of nice pics. This wasn't everyone but my camera can only see so far down the street.

I've been on your side for a long time. I've probably been much more involved in my past that you have. Then I saw what really goes on. I know your type.

You nailed it perfectly... I can understand Annas for sticking up for his people but to try and mislead people. For shame...He can post all the propaganda he likes. Subconciously he is looking for material that is pro palestinian. Whether he wants to admit it or not. He is not fooling everyone. I have seen atrocities from both sides. Body parts of victims all over the road. Yes, carried out by suicide bombers that like to board buses full of civillians you name it. In war there is no fairness.

like I said before I'm not on either side. I am on the side of peace and progress. However, I will not tolerate those who try and manipulate facts to try and sway peoples opinion. Yes you Annas Mr I'm right your wrong so listen to me. There is no innocent parties here. I have seen both sides attack each other brutally. What do you expect its a war.

Annas, as much good as you think your doing, your not. You should also be aware that by trying to manipulate facts your no better the tribal leaders that teach the young to hate. They end up growing up to be your future terrorists. We don't need anymore terrorists there are plenty of loonies out there.

If there is any chance for peace it is up to you to promote peace not to instigate more conflict. Civilizations come and go and people move on to different areas...it happens. What you and your people need is to learn to live in peace and forget all this nonsense. How many more lives need to be lost. Go back to palestine teach the young and old tolerance and respect. That will work out better for you then trying to convince everyone that your people are innocent. It just doesn't fly.

Just think how silly it will be when your still fighting and along comes Nibiru to spoil the day. Just throwing that out there it is on its way.

When the power of love overcomes the love of power the world will know peace.

so you base your opinions of him on pure speculation and label that as the "truth"..and no matter what he says to you or how he tries to defend himself....you will still label him based on the opinions you have created in your mind, which are founded from "reading between the lines"

people like you scare me..
