Ever gone to the outer suburbs and seen the mullet-sporting, moccasin-wearing scum that populates Australia? Ever watched 60 minutes or aca or Today Tonight? Look at the whole Cronulla thing.. our bogans are just as thumb-in-the-arse backwards as anyone else's. Most people in any given country are stupid, intolerant, ignorant sheep. The only difference is the US has:
a) Really scary evangelical, gun-rights and other right wing lobby groups that give their rednecks an organisational structure; and
b) they've got the motherin nukes which justifies any ignorant opinion they might want to share with the world.
Add those two factors to our society and we'd sustain the same rhetoric they do.
That's why I think patriotism is bs. It relies on some underlying assumption that you're inherently superior by virtue of having popped out of a vagina in one country as opposed to another.. That and it so easily leads to nationalism of a really ugly flavour among the easily led dumbasses that constitute the majority of any populace. |

If we're painting the entire country with broad brush strokes based on racial/cultural stereotypes, it's pointless arguing with you. This is the same sort of reasoning reasoning that, applied differently, that has been behind almost every form of bigotry. |
