and for the astros, well just take away berkman and ensberg's juices, then you have a minor league team .. :wtf: |

10. Bernie Williams (OF, Yankees, $12,357,143)
Oh, Bernie. He's one of our favorite Yankees (and we don't have many). But he's hitting .240 with six HR and 37 RBI, which projects out to well off his lifetime marks in those categories, and he's one of the worst regular outfielders in the bigs, ranking 79th in win shares.
7. Sidney Ponson (SP, Orioles, $8,500,000)
Left-handed hitters must drool when they see they'll be facing Baltimore's 253-pound warrior. They're hitting .361 against him this year, with a nifty .928 OPS. If only that were the whole story. Ponson never has been much better than average, but in 2004 (11-15, 5.30 ERA) and again this year, he has been much worse. Hence the 7-9 record, and the 5.91 ERA. And in July, he has been just awful, losing four straight and piling up an 8.84 ERA for the month. That's trade bait only for a team that's starving.
3. Kevin Brown (SP, Yankees, $15,714,286)
The best thing that can be said about Brown is that he has been consistent this season. He has been hit hard at home, and he has been hit hard away. Both lefties and righties get on base at about a .390 clip against Brown, a dismal stat. Well, not as dismal as his 6.51 ERA -- almost double his lifetime mark. |
:haha: :haha: :haha:

A contract is a contract, remember?
I agree Bernie is not producing like all Yankee fans want him too, but only two or three years ago, he was spanking 30 homers and 100 RBI no problem. When he signed his 6 (or was it 7) year deal, he was a "true" Yankee, a clutch hitter and a great fielder who definitely helped them win four world series. But that's what happens when you sign long term contracts...Bernie has declined very rapidly and Brown, ugh...don't even get me started on him.
That's why, as a GM, I'd be leery of signing guys to more than a 4 or 5 year deal these days. Obviously, people like Jeter and Arod are the exception but what if they got injured sometime? The team is ed.
Overpaid this year? Hello Carlos Beltran.:D |

They should have that 'no-guaranteed contracts' rule like in NFL. That way the players will strive for the better, otherwise they get signed to huge contracts and do nothing. |

i heard that the yankees have picked up hideo nomo from waivers .. :wtf: ..
i don't think the yankees have learned yet .. they haven't seen the effects of picking up washed up players .. first kevin brown, then al leiter, now hideo nomo ... who's next ?? bret saberhagen and frank tanana ? |

yeah but I wouldn't say somebody like Bernie Williams or even Kevin Brown didn't deserve their contracts when they signed them. It's the length of the deal and the inability for teams to buy out players that's a problem. Bernie has only recently become a mediocre player (as much as it pains me to say that, I always loved Bernie) because his body won't allow him to do what he used to. He's 36 but hasn't aged as gracefully as others...same with Brown.
It's these guys who sign huge contracts (like Beltran and Beltre) who are really young guys, have one great year, then ink a 6 year deal. It's nuts, but there is a difference. |

it's either sign washed up veterans who may possibly rediscover their form or bring in absolute E from the minors in the form of Redding, May, Franklin, etc.
What does everyone have against the Yankees making these deals? What are they supposed to do? Pavano, Wright and Wang (all in their 20s) have gone down to injury and the Yanks are STILL in playoff contention. They need arms FFS. |

maybe you're right .. this may be a backlash from overpaying many players on the team, and not having enough money to do some kind of trade-money or pay extra for players coming into the team ..
but at least they can talk to other teams other than florida (burnett) for better pitching .. they can go for minor league prospects, thinking about their future, since they have many players 30+.
the yankees transactions as of late clearly states that they are thinking about the "present" rather than "the future" .. |
|
|
| Dj Smitty20 |
do you blame them for thinking about the present?
Jeter is 31, Arod is 30, Matsui 31, Sheffield 36, Mussina 35, Rivera 35, RJ 41, etc. Their only starting player is Cano at 22. That's what happens when you form a core group of guys and build a team around them but still....they need to win now. The yanks will contend for the next few seasons but once guys like Jetes and Arod start reaching their mid 30s, it could be a really bad run in the Bronx for awhile. |

I see what you are seeing. Thats not my point, however. My point is, if the team signs the player for 6 years but then when his performance drops it SHOULD be able to end the contract, if it wishes. All fair ... That way the players will strive for their best, knowing they risk termination.
I read enough about buy-outs and players being lazy when it comes to improving performance ... stupid stupid stuff |

I kinda like the new clause in the NHL CBA...if a player starts to suck, they can buy them out at 2/3 of the contract....sounds fair I think. Teams need to stay away from these 7-10 year deals. I think five should be the maximum.
Anyway, Manny wants a trade apparently. He can come to the Yankees as a DH any day.:D |
