Agreed. He swung the bat, it was a called strike (strike 3 mind you)
so regardless if the ball hit the ground or not... how does 3 strikes not equal 1 out? I forgot...
Did anyone see the postgame Q&A with the umpires, heh.. Doug Eddings was beating around the bush, very terse answers... he kept on saying "Well if you watch the replay... if you watch this...if you watch that..."

Ya, he kept saying it was his "mechanics" of calling the play or something, ver sketchy. Adn then they kept saying that they saw the replay and that the ball switched directions so they can't justify whether it hit the ground or not. WTF:whip: Only a retard would say that the ball hit the ground, the leather was around the ball and you could tell from seperate angles. |

But what does that have to do with anything? That's what I don't get. The fact of the matter is that he SWUNG and MISSED. Strike 3, Out 3.

Ahh to be young and in love. :p
Dropped 3rd strike rule. If a batter swings and misses at strike 3, and the catcher fails to catch the ball, the player is able to go to 1st base. However, the player can be tagged out or the ball can be thrown to first for a force out.
It gets interesting when you have a Strike-Out pitcher on the mound because it's possible to have a 4 strike out inning. Batters 1 and 2 strike out regularly, batter 3 strikes out and gets to first on a dropped 3rd strike. Batter 4 strikes out. It may have happened this year, but according to baseball-almanac.com, the last time it happened was in 2004 when Mike Stanton k'd 4 in one inning.

If the ball hits the ground on the third strike, the batter can try and go to first base, which is why sometimes you see the catcher tag the batter after he swings and misses on strike three. I guess the only times the batters actually make it to first base safely is when the ball rolls past the catcher or in this instance when the catcher throws the ball away and runs to the dugout. |

i don't know who to fault ?
the catcher josh paul or the umpire ??
the umpire clearly called the third strike, and made the gesture that the catcher caught the ball ...
then again, josh paul should have made the last second decision when pyrniski was running to first .. paul should have thrown the ball to first .. i don't know ..
escobar should have helped a little by telling paul to throw to first .. |

| The Catcher almost ALWAYS tags the runner or throws to first in that situation, just to be on the safe side. Even if the catcher is sure that he caught it, if it's borderline and the runner is running to first, you have to make the tag or throw to first. The catcher in this situation is totally at fault, whether the umpire made the wrong call or not. |

any baseball player should have learned that in little league.
that stuff is taught in little league baseball.
but it's considered a road game for the angels .. taking 1 of 2 from the white sox is all the angels need .. going back to la for 3 4 and 5 ..
3 : lackey vs garland
4 : santana vs garcia
game 5 is going to be interesting .. should the white sox put in orlando hernandez in game 5, if they take 1 of 3 from the angels at la ?? or are they going to stick with a 4 man rotation, and have hernandez fresh for middle relief ? |

i wouldnt be shocked to see el duque have to come in to relieve garland. he hasnt pitched since the end of the regular season and might have some rust.
they were talking about it on baseball tonight (yea those guys usually just mumble some mindless ) but they brought up a good point. aj was behind the plate all game and it looked like he knew something was different with the play, most likely the ump didnt say something that he usually says after a strike out. if you watch the play aj starts to walk off and then notices something is wrong and takes off to first. that little fake out is probably what got him on first because everyone started walking off the field. i love how everyone is acting like this is the end of the world. the way i look at it, the ALCS has turned into a best of five with LA having home field advantage. true this is a momentum changer but theres still five games left to decide the winner. |
