Label Profile : echospace [detroit]
Respected artist and revered label

Respected artist and revered label, with the small matter of a classic record to follow up...

Dub techno is such a defined sound that it can be hard to identify individual voices amongst the choir, but Echospace’s ‘The Coldest Season’ managed to float above the competing proponents through sheer consistency of vision. Released on Modern Love in 2007, it won plaudits for bridging elements of the more experimental, beatless boundary between ambient drone and techno, and a stronger rhythmic focus; often, what really beguiled was an ‘anti-hook’: the gentle reverberated white noise wash that has come to be the defining feature of some of their work.

Echospace the artist comprises Stephen Hitchell (AKA Intrusion, Soultek and Variant) and Rod Modell (alias Deepchord, Imax and one half of CV313 with Hitchell). Echospace the label is a springboard for many of the prolific twosome’s many nomes de guerre, and it turns out to be founded on some pretty strong principles: “The most important aspect of our philosophy is to believe in what we’re doing one hundred percent,” states Hitchell from his Detroit home. “My wife and I do all the packaging, labelling and stickering by hand; it’s important to me to have a connection with each and every copy out there. The process is time consuming but it’s also important in terms of energy and balance. I’ve received many demos, but Echospace was set up to be a ‘family’; a group of friends encouraging and supporting each other; something a bit closer to home.”

He goes on: “Another passion of mine is mastering audio. It’s very important to me that I master all of the music released on the label in a very certain way. It helps give Echospace a sound of its own.” This last statement is undeniable; within seconds, an Echospace production never fails to announce itself - glacial yet warm; restful and with driving movement; theirs is a complex human face amongst an impassive robot populous.

“My main source of inspiration comes from my wife, son, daughter and family. When I record, I sort of tune out the rest of the world and what is happening in it. I never viewed making music as more than ‘self-therapy’; it’s something I do to express myself, to let my heart and soul speak.”

Having recorded music for over twenty years, Stephen tellingly reveals that many of the label’s releases are tracks from his past that he’s updated. With a vast catalogue of material from which to choose, some can rear their head in the most unexpected way: “The entire Intrusion project was compiled from recordings done five to twelve years prior. I had an old sampler break down on me years ago; I was about to give it away five years later and it booted up. Since I had been working on other projects it was a bit of an “intrusion” in my work flow. I couldn’t ignore it and had to finish the work left on that machine before it died for good.”

Echospace are now set to return to the limelight with a sequel to their magnum opus that took three years to gestate. Described as “a sonic travelogue”, Stephen continues: “We’ve had the opportunity to play at Sonar, Berghain, Fabric and many others, and this album is a direct result of all the live shows. The main concern for us was maturity: we didn’t want to repeat ourselves and release another album too close to the first one. ‘The Coldest Season’ is a very special album for us both, but it was also a representation of a time and place of which we’re no longer a part. This album is how we feel now.”

‘Liumin’ will be released on Modern Love in summer this year; Hitchell is also working on a double CV313 album, which will feature remixes from the likes of King Midas Sound and Brock Van Wey.

4 longues piges que j'attendais la suite d'un album qui m'avait complètement renversé et arrive:

quote:
"Second album du trio Saycet, ce Through the Windows délivre une musique éléctro douce et mélancolique. Sur des mélodies qui semblent vouloir arrêter le temps. La voix de Phoene Somsavath fait des merveilles, évoquant le spleen d’un Syd Matters, ou la clarté d’un groupe comme Lamb."

Un seul mot: Merveilleux! :)
