Stanford's basketball team has always been a top 25 team in the nation...this year they knocked off the number one team kansas and are currently ranked 17 which is pretty good...i dunno i'm really into sports i wanted to go to a school where sports was a big thing but usually those schools are harder to get in and i didn't so i envy you...i recommend you to go |
I envy the fact she was accepted to, and can afford to go to, Stanford. That's where Bill Clinton's daughter went, and many Supreme Court Justices etc. You must be really smart Echo! I had a friend in high school who went to Cal Tech, but he was a genius haha.
:)
Actually my dad was accepted to Stanford and Harvard Law School, but couldn't afford to matriculate without amassing huge debt. He's a-lot smarter than me though (you should see how he writes) lol. He told me he went for a law degree because the vietnam war was still raging at that time, and he didn't want to be drafted. The fact that those in grad school were exempted from being drafted was quite an unfair policy if you think about it to poor/lazy/stupid people. My dad may have come from a poor farming family, but he was not stupid!
Then again, the dems controlled both houses of congress and the presidency at that time largely due to the assasination of Kennedy and the overwhelming 'symphathy' vote. There's no question that that party does have certain values when it comes to domestic policy (i.e. helping disadvantaged people who need help). They implemented a system whereby young people with financial need could obtain very generous federal grants and loans for college. I don't know, I see it as having a heart, but you can call it "socialism" if you'd like. ;)
The point is, it was much easier at that time for someone to attend college (at least state colleges) regardless of their socioeconomic status than it is now.
It makes me so mad that the government has cut federal pell grants for college students in recent years. How can poor and middle class people afford to better themselves?!?!?!:whip: :(
My Great Aunt's nephew was killed in Vietnam, and we visited "The Wall" in Washington a while back to get an imprint of his name; a futile war if you ask me, but we did keep Western Europe from falling under Moscow's rule. Good. :P
I'm sorry for injecting politics into my post, but I feel really strongly about the issue of college financial assistance for poor familes.
p.s. Echo, basketball is so much fun! |

hi hi hi California, Boomer, and Whiskers! hi hi hi to you, too Dave!
In exactly 11 hours, I will be finished with my finals! 11 hours seems sooooooooooo far away. Ugh.
Okay, so Montie is taking finals which means Bondor too, Boomer and I are taking finals, Tuan is taking finals...Emil, in your program, do you have final exams too? Phot and Whiskers when are your final exams? Next week? Next week, I will be in Copenhagen... then London...and I will be 18 (Dave Saenz posted an article a few months ago that indicated 18 is the age of consent in California. :)so yay for me)
Arj (Arjen?), your new avatar is cool.
I feel so tired but wired. Weird. Too much coffee. No cream. Not enough sleep.
Yeah, I am very fortunate to be here, Dave. And its not fair that I have had and will continue to have more opportunities than so many others. I'm not smarter than most.
When I visited Washington DC, I viewed The Wall. I think we all had tears in our eyes. Very emotional moment. Sometimes we help prepare food and serve dinners to the homeless in San Fran, and a disproportionate number are Vietnam Vets. That bothers me. In fact, most of the homeless people I see are mentally ill, Vietnam Vets, or drug addicts...and too many children. |

to be honest, i enjoy being a freshman in sophomore level classes and getting higher grades than other juniors / sophomores / seniors without putting too much effort in and paying only ~$2000/semester (so far)
finals next week, but who the hell studies? it's all about memorizing, and thank whoever, i have good memory :D
3 more classes left to go! |

2 hours and 20 mins til my last final test...then I have til fri at 5 to hand in my last final paper. then I am done.
I totally agree with ya dave, infact I think I posted something similar to that in the chill out, good luck finding it though lol. Basically I was saying how many athletic based scholarships there are as compared to any other kind of scholarship. I mean sports are sweet n all, but the athletic part has distanced itself from academia.
I especially noticed this whenever I visited michigan state, those guys with scholarships are so lucky, they take group tests, get specific reviews, and don't have to go to class. Its a shame they even try to educate them. I like who most of Europe does it, if you are smart and have potential, you go to university.
ah, anyways, time to cram in that last bit o knowledge before the final of my life.
Echo, I hope all your finals have been going great so far and the next ones go flawlessly. and a huge yeah-whoo-hoo for turning the legal consent age soon :), coming to vegas anytime soon...ah...ah...ahhh...;)
g'luck on finals everyone. |
