Then again, the dems controlled both houses of congress and the presidency at that time largely due to the assasination of Kennedy and the overwhelming 'symphathy' vote. There's no question that that party does have certain values when it comes to domestic policy (i.e. helping disadvantaged people who need help). They implemented a system whereby young people with financial need could obtain very generous federal grants and loans for college. I don't know, I see it as having a heart, but you can call it "socialism" if you'd like. ;)
The point is, it was much easier at that time for someone to attend college (at least state colleges) regardless of their socioeconomic status than it is now.
It makes me so mad that the government has cut federal pell grants for college students in recent years. How can poor and middle class people afford to better themselves?!?!?!:whip: :(
My Great Aunt's nephew was killed in Vietnam, and we visited "The Wall" in Washington a while back to get an imprint of his name; a futile war if you ask me, but we did keep Western Europe from falling under Moscow's rule. Good. :P
I'm sorry for injecting politics into my post, but I feel really strongly about the issue of college financial assistance for poor familes.
p.s. Echo, basketball is so much fun! |
i wouldn't say the dem's have a "heart" they just appeal to a different voting bracket as opposed to the repubs.
the lone star mr. baines johnson was a dem. and started vietnam.
but i guess he did stop the evils of communism from spreading to the rest of Asia  :p
he had some great social policies that he implemented in his term, but the war ruined him, greatly hurt our country and our citizens, greatly hurt the vietnamese, and the war spending ruined the great policies which were later killed by the noble "i am not a crook" nixon.
but yeah everyone should be able to go to the college of their choice regardless of cost if they qualify. its not too hard to pay for and get into a state college. i could go to Mizzou for 2000 + living costs a semester if i went back home to missouri.
but there is no way i'd be happy to attend that sorry as hick school :p
my mom grew up in Kansas City, in a large very blue collar family. mom was irish dad was italian. she was the 3rd oldest of 9. was almost always taking care of the siblings. her parents didn't want her to go to college because they didn't want her too far away. her dad refused to pay because he didn't want her to go (and also cuz he didn't want to fill out the financial forms to get gov't aid cuz he ran a under the counter cleaning business which he tried to avoid taxs on). so for the first 3 years of college my mom paid her way through. working her ass off at her job and studying to get a degree in bio. eventually on her last year her parents finaly came around.
now i'm "spoiled" as my mom says. i attend a very good uni, very far from home and don't have to worry about paying for it (i am here on scholarship though, so the price difference between me hear and mizzou isn't too incredibly substancial).
so i'm very fortunate and lucky.
but i think about all this great opportunity i have and i really think it should be available to anyone. you think about all this rediculous gov't spending, sooo much money is wasted which could be used to make the lives easier or better for so many people. how many billions have been spent in Iraq? that money could have send 1000's of kids to school in the uni of their choice that they deserve to be at.
its funny though, cuz my mom is republican and i am more democrat (i don't really affiliate with either party, i just hate Bush).
but anyway, thats my rant.
i don't wanna study anymore. i only got 3 hours of sleep last nite and now i'm on a caffeine high. i'm all jittery and i feel all ed up.
i really really hate caffeine i've decided.
had a test at 8 this morning now got my chem test in 3 hours.
i envy you echo cuz your almost done.
have another test tomorow and bio on monday.
blaaah. |

i wanna hear the story
anyway, i just got raped by my chemistry professor.
the test was ing hard. the questions on it looked nothing like the last years exam or the midterms we had in the class
everyone seemed to think they failed tho. so i'm hoping for the curve to save me. |

don't you hate it when that happens? they give you an easy practice test from last year that you do 100% correctly in 20 minutes, so you're thinking "wow, i'm good at this"
and then you come to the test and it's like the most terrible level of hell and the professor's sitting there smirking and saying "i thought it was easy, i certainly didn't think it would take you more than 2 hours... but apparently, half of you stayed for more than 4... >losers<"
and then the highest grade in the class is a 78 (on an open-book, open-notes test!!) and 60+ is an A!
well, i'm getting specific here. |
