I actually agree 100% with this. I really like Brooklyn beer. Plus it's nice to support a local biz.

i'm not a fan of brooklyn beer

would be nice to have a choice but then again, I haven't been to an outdoor festival in how long?

probably won't see me at this one either, just here to comment on the beer

So with about 10 days remaining I was wondering if you New Yorkers could help this little Detroit boy with the following thing.

For starters where is the goddamn after party Saturday. The official is pretty weak, Heartthrob is cool, but not worth $35.

Also my buddy and I are first timers. We're staying in the Bronx close to Yankee Stadium. What is the best way to get to NYC. I know there is a subway relatively close.

Any recommendations about the city. We're arriving early Friday to get a day of tourist-ey in. How about cool bars to check out on Friday. (Probably a very volatile conversation but...) where is the best place to grab some pizza.

I'm super excited, it looks like my home for saturday is going to be sunday school grove.

Any replies appreciated.

Thanks!

It doesn't look like much going on sat night, I'd third GHB's suggestion. If you still want to go out, check out the smaller places (Sullivan Room, for example) and parties with local djs.

For pizza, try Lombardi's, it's delicious, although I think they only sell whole pies (haven't been in a while, google it, it's very well-known), so go with friends. A great by-the-slice place is Artichoke on 14th st bet 1st & 2nd aves, their crab pizza is awesome. Also, the new Batali/Bastianich italian marketplace (Eataly) is opening next week, they'll have artisan pizza, raw meat bar (they are serving some amazing Razza Piemontese beef as carpaccio, tartare, carne sala, etc), seafood bar, vegetarian cafe, coffee bar, etc, so I'd recommend you to stop by (although prob not the cheapest eats, but not outrageous- except for the restaurant Manzo inside Eataly, I just saw the menu and it will be expensive).

Be VERY careful in the area where you're staying, a can of whoop-ass will not suffice. Cabs are your best friend, taking one from 125th won't be that expensive. Actually, I think Detroit is a bit safer than the South Bronx, lol. Except for maybe Cass Ave. :nervous:

One last thing: DO NOT compare DEMF to EZ. If you do, you'll be disappointed.

I brought a couple of clif bars in, it was a good idea. The food was just OK.

On the other hand, the canned champagne( :wtf: ) was pretty damn tasty.

edit: I got some of those disposable flasks for DEMF this year, they are great. Just an idea.

Are there outlets to plugin / charge ones cell phones or is better to just turn it off.

At EDC, with the amount of people you couldn't reliably connect to any network but I don't suspect NYC would have such issues.

chaska - lombardi's was bought by albanians, it's gone to from the legacy it's known for thus making it a tourist trap.

Artichoke has other locations as well, I believe under the highline close to 18th street (or maybe south more).

I would venture to say Arturo's on Houston to prove equally as good as Grimaldi's and the former Lombardi's. Artichoke is fan fare so I wouldn't say it's a must.

if you're visiting NYC and you want NYC food, grab a slice of pizza at any no-name pizza joint or pizza joint that has some variation of the words Original, Famous, or Rays - you'll find every combo of that pizza joint title in this city.

Gray's Papaya yes I'd recommend it for a tourist, and of course a bagel at any various location possible.

Eataly in the same paragraph as lombardi's isn't the best of the spectrum, from gourmet to staple (or formerly staple) I'd venture to say there are many more cost efficient eateries in this city then a batali restaurant.

If you're looking for good eats, I'd say Shake Shack should be on a list for quick and cheaps, for a sit down I'd toss out my usual affordable list ranging from Landmarc, Buenos Aires, Dos Caminos, Yama, Tomoe, and the likes of the restaurant thread.

I've had my taste of new york, I've worked with Gourmet Mag, Bon Appetite, and Saveur with a heavy influence in the Fashion Industry so I like to believe I've gotten around.

This post is not intended to discredit Mario's presence in NYC, although as a straight hetero male, I have to say that Mario is quite the pig around ladies, great chef no doubt about that, just his charisma is quite intrusive.

-edit-
I'd also like to applaud the OP about staying in the south bronx, since you're from detroit, I think you'd be comfortable with the area surrounding yankee stadium. It's not as hard as you think it might be but if you keep your wits about you then I think you'll be fine. I'm surprised more people haven't learned that traveling to randall's island from the east side of 125th means DEATH, you'll queue up in a line and try to hail any taxi possible that'll take you to RI.

The new yorker in me would suggest staying west closer to Columbia on 125th where you could very easily get the crosstown bus to RI easier then standing on the eastside queue...probably easier to find a cab going to RI as well on the west. Afterall, WEST IS BEST

By no means I'm trying to put Eataly into the same box with a (former) NY staple. Just that as a food enthusiast, what B&B are doing with Eataly is something different that I haven't seen much of. Maybe yeah, Chelsea Market has some interesting stuff and some other gourmet stores (Brooklyn Kitchen is the !), but for sure I'll be buying a rare Barolo from some odd winery while my veggies are being prepped for me @ the produce counter so I do less work @ home to go with some Piemontese beef that I'll eat RARE. Or maybe just order a pizza to take home after I take a class with Lidia for an afternoon. And what about the beer garden? Let's just not forget that B&B are just merely bringing Farinetti's concept (although Eataly NY is a bit on steroids), and I think it's genius.

I don't really like Batali much, he's very arrogant when he talks about food, and like he's the only one that speaks italian. Too pretentious for me. I feel like I'm being patronized when watching one of his shows or reading an article about him. Plus his restaurants are very overrated, I was sorely disappointed by Lupa and Otto.

About hot dogs, I'll take crif dogs over Gray's Papaya any day.

We should continue this in the restaurant thread so we don't totally jack this one.

brooklyn lagerrrrr! hell yeah. all i drink at the yankee games i've been to even though there's only like one area in the stadium that seels it.

9 bucks for it would be lame though.

Last year there were no outlets nor could I connect to the ATT network the entire day either day with my iphone. It pretty much sucked ass because I couldn't text friends when we got split up or check twitter/post photos etc. I hope that changes this year but knowing ATT it probably wont.

Hey can you elaborate on this a little more- I checked the MTA site and could not even find the X80 line on the map- where do you catch on the westside as it seems like a great idea, thanks in advance.

Look @ 125th and Broadway on the westside of Manhattan (left side)

You can see under Dr. MLK Blvd highlighted in bold text.

Bus routes traveling right (east) that take you to RI.

The bus queues up on the 6th train @ 125 where I believe most people will start 'looking' for the bus going to RI.

I'm sure you're better off catching the bus closer to the west and crawl east along 125th before it heads to RI. At least you'll be on the bus and not standing online somewhere on 125th on the eastside.
