I watched this show when it first aired those many years ago. I found it riveting in the beginning, though a tad convoluted near the end of the third season.surprise surprise its demise soon followed.

I started watching BSG. Made it to episode 4 but that one sucked so bad that I'm done with the show. First episode was great, then it got worse and worse, diving into all the typical bull.
Can't believe that show has such a great following.

No substitute for good taste. Act of Contrition was excellent.

You can't possibly be serious. :wtf:
I'm sure one can defend the show in saying it has a bunch of other good episodes, but is Act of Contrition seriously your idea of an excellent episode? Talk about good taste then... :wtf: :haha:

As far as the overarching plot goes, absolutely not. not much happened. I liked this one for the characterisation; adama finding out about starbuck’s indiscretion. The death of his son being quite an important component of his relationship with lee (if you’ve seen the mini series?). i was usually moved by adama’s serious moments in the series.

I have to agree with PKC here.

While the episode might have been a bit slow, it sets quite a lot of groundwork that ends up being drawn on in future episodes.

Except for a few stand-alone episodes here and there, I think it's a mistake to rate BSG's quality on an episode-by-episode basis. How it works best is as a long story arc, and how each piece of the storytelling fits together over time.

While I don’t understand meat’s distaste for the series, I can understand no show is for everyone. Ditching a series after 1 supposedly poor episode does seem a little strange though. no series is perfect.

Some brief notes on what I hated about this episode:

  • The accident at the beginning, besides being retarded, is bad writing. It just sets up the issue that they need to train new pilots, which they could have just told us. Instead they use something more flashy and that sucks because there's no need at all for the accident to happen.
  • It got better when they started with character development, however they did this in a bad way, too. The "dark secret from the past", apart from being overused and cliché, is imho a weak way of characterization. It's like the writer couldn't find a way to work certain traits or conflicts into the current situation and instead decided to work them in the past. Now I'm not entirely against this, but when the secret is introduced and resolved within half an hour then again I consider it crappy storytelling.
  • What really killed me was the end. Of course a bunch of ing cylons had to appear during a training flight. you! The cliché self sacrifice of product placement girl. you! The cliché youngster who turns around to help product placement girl and saves the day. you! Why did the cylons even attack a whole fleet when it turns out a noob and a chick can kick their ass? What happened to military strategy? Nothing, cause they're another shoved in plot device. you! They could have ended the episode with the character stuff but no, they needed a starship fight where no damned fight belongs. you!

Of course it's true that one episode doesn't destroy a whole show with a prolonged concept, but if you start out with a great first episode only to do everything wrong in the fourth then it'll piss viewers like me off.

Keep watching the show,

That’s what ACCIDENTS are mate! :p i might also add that galactica's age and disrepair is an ongoing part of the show, and not just in relation to its survival due to out-dated technology.

  • What are you talking about? it was a primary point of the mini series, ie 4 episodes prior to this one. zak’s death was a major plot point for 3 leading characters. starbuck’s admission was a major factor in allowing lee to forgive adama and move on. And the reason it was “resolved” (which it hasn’t been, but you wouldn’t know this because you haven’t watched the next episode) is because adama loves starbuck “like a daughter”. Family gets special allowances, which again, you would see if you continued watching.

  • Hotdog didn’t “save the day”. He lost his viper and starbuck was also shot down. FYI, that wasn’t a starship fight, it was a fighter fight. If you’re gonna be a critic, at least get the terminology right. the “military strategy” being used by the cylons was a scouting party that weren’t even aware the humans were there. The actual military strategy in this show is absolutely superb, if you bothered to watch more than 2 seconds. Every major conflict takes you through the tactics employed, and they’re actually very smart.

Luckily BSG’s critical acclaim and the upcoming prequel series don’t give a about your silly complaints.

Wow, that's uncanny. Just swap the word BSG for Game of thrones.

Except the bit about the fist episode
