The Television Show Recommendation Thread (pg. 88)

WEST Wing fans pay attention.

Aaron Sorkin is returning to the small screen to direct a new television series.

But unlike the The West Wing, he’s not focusing on the White House.

This time he’s targeting journalists in a network news station.

The Newsroom will follow the perils of famed impartial TV anchor, Will McAvoy (played by Jeff Daniels) whose professional life is thrown into chaos after he flies into a blind rage, throwing off his non-partisan shackles during a speech to a roomfull of college students.

The trailer, which was released this week, reveals that the show will feature the rapid walk-and-talks made famous by The West Wing.

Politics will still be a central theme as Sorkin explores the influence of right wing pundits on news networks.

But unlike The West Wing, with all its idealism, The Newsroom seems to be far from the political utopia presented in its predecessor.

The Newsroom portrays the grubby, dark side of journalism, as seen from the perspective of the good guy struggling in a world that’s increasingly powered by think tanks, high powered businessmen and political organisations.

McAvoy considers himself a moderate Republican who “only seems liberal because I believe that hurricanes are caused by high barometric pressure and not gay marriage."

But that won't stop political pundits from trying to discredit him as a left-wing commie pinko for going on air and making sense. (West Wing fans will appreciate the hark-back to the first episode where Josh Lyman's job hung in the balance after making a similarly ill-advised comment on-air).

The Newsroom is also far more vulgar than slick talking West Wing. Jeff Daniels drops the F-bomb in the first minute of the trailer. It’s a far more cynical world Sorkin is living in this time around.

The Newsroom will air on June 24 in the US. It’s unclear how long Australians will have to wait before it gets released nationally, international release dates are yet to be announced.

awesome.

Sweet, west wing was one of the best tv shows so im highly optimistic about this. And it hits quite nicely the current climate where the republicans have taken things so far to the right, that even what used to be their own ideas are now considered communist leftie muslim atheist socialst.

A friend recommended American Horror Story. I was really skeptical at first, but I'm actually enjoying it. Usually I'm an all or nothing guy, but this is just good fun pass the time stuff. Just what I needed right now.

Absolutely not, it's trash tv at it's ing worst.

Just caught the first three episodes of Loiter Squad on Adult Swim. Good stuff.

Edit: And yes, Newsroom looking good. Only seen a few West Wing episodes, and I thought The Social Network was a preeeetty ty movie, but I'm a big fan of some of Greg Mottolas work, so if they keep him on for more than the pilot I'm sure this'll be good. And not just a hit.

^ El stupido

So it's more trashy than Jersey Shore? Kardashians?

It's hardly trashy. It has several faults, but trashiness is not one of them.

Oh yeah, forgot 'trash tv' was already an expression. Does garbage programming work better?

Lost is a commercial follow-the-formel and tug-at-all-the-"right"-strings show. ing sheep fodder.

I tried to watch lost and after the 3rd episode I just couldn't take the bull anymore. It was trying way too hard, most of the actors annoyed the out of me, and it seemed those without any imagination for themselves were the ones with the biggest boners for it. Even the die hard fans were cursing at their own stupidity by season three (when even JJ abrams and the writers publicly agreed they has lost the plot).

I saw the first episode or two, and I wasn't exactly taken back by it, but when you share a TV with 7 other soldiers who wants to watch it, I'd take that over staring into the wall :P

I actually just found out the big surprise twist ending that they were dead the whole time or what ever and i ing lolled. Mostly because of the South Park episode with Michael Jackson and that TV shop guy, but also because it's just what you'd expect.

Anywhooooo... I think people who loved LOST are the same people who liked Inception.

And while we're nearly on the subject of Nolan/Abrams, are there anyone who likes 'Person of Interest'?

Watched the first episode, thought it was boring, then kinda twist at the end feeling? During the 2nd or 3rd episode I fell asleep, and that's usually the nail on the coffin for suspense/actioney series for me :P

The end was pretty lame-o. By season 5 it had gotten pretty stupid. I gave up for a while and only went back and caught up when I heard they were ending it, and I figured I might as well catch up. Again, there was a lot wrong with Lost, but there were some great parts as well.

Yeah, because internet screen names really give useful insight in to someone's true persona  If you really need to know it's just an Alt (hint: look at the caps) until my normal account gets restored from being accidentally banned.

Most people I knew who were in to it gave up by season three, and only watched the end, in the hopes of not having wasted all that time on a tug-and-no-jizz exercise.
