this is so right. I don't know any human interaction which is not based on an attempt to understand other people through shared (or an attempt to newly explore) backgrounds--
Lira identifies as a linguist, I don't know much about linguistics, but will attempt to use my crappy superficial understanding of it to talk to him about it since its interesting to me! Similarly Lira would admit he doesn't know heaps about transgender stuff, but is interested and is attempting to empathise with nef so posts a link..
Lira wouldn't freak the out and call me a complete idiot, or moron if all I had to go on was a "linguistics for dummys" book though, even if it was full of simply innacurate or wrong information, he would most likely point to a better source, or just smile and nod politely... Nef on the other hand freaks the out, calls Lira a bigot (when everyone knows Lira is most likely the least bigoted person on TA) and offers no useful information at all...

And I personally like when people do that. Even when Nou tries to tell me I'm wrong about something about linguistics I like it because... hell, I'm talking about stuff I care about (and he wasn't completely off the mark either).

Reminds me of this one girl who started hitting on me last year by the lake. It was cute because it was painfully obvious she had never heard of linguistics before, yet she really wanted to talk to me and, even if I didn't even get her number for obvious reasons, I was flattered by her attempt :D |
