I'm obviously talking about linguistics grad school, which, as I've said before, I consider to be a Ponzi scheme. |
Even if this were true, I've been teaching languages (English, Japanese, Spanish) for nearly a decade now, which has nothing to do whatsoever with linguistics (except for the course I'm now offering on Japanese linguistics). And, even if teaching languages had anything to do with linguistics, I've also had vanilla 8-to-6 office jobs for months on end in order to have my financial independence, having landed my very first academic job years after I received my first payment from "a real job" ;) |

Yes, what you say is totally true. But I've now arrived in the upper level of the pyramid scheme and am offering a course on Japanese linguistics. Until I got there I've been teaching languages (English, Japanese, Portuguese with a strange accent) for nearly a decade, a skill that was a nice by-product of my academic wankery and personal interests. Then again, even Jay worked as a teacher, so I know it doesn't count. Buuuuut, I've also helped my aunt in the bakery and sold vanilla ice-cream in front of an office building from 8 to 6 for a few months. So if you compare me with Nou I've totally done actual value-creating work before finally reaching the Ponzi scheme level where I don't need to do that anymore. |
:p
Now back to seriousness, what I was actually referring to is that there are a bunch of very harsh job markets out there. Corporate business has some strict rules, crazy competitiveness and is often merciless. Compared to that we both live in a nice comfy bubble. Although, yours is a bit fluffier, I believe.
Also, there's the minimum wage job market, which is a completely different shark tank. |

Avana used to get quite upset about this focus on the potential existence of a penis in her knickers, actually. However, suppose everyone you know that looks female, but you haven't seen naked, actually has a penis. They still look girly, with waistline and breasts, but they've got a little extra dangling away from sight. Would you switch the pronoun because of that? Also, if someone chopped your best mate's willy off, would you stop using "he" to refer to your now penisless friend?
That's the problem of being so focused on the Viennese yoghurt factory... our language is too limited when it comes to all possible variations (and quite understandably so :p). |
Ah but what pronoun i would choose to use is ultimately irrelevant since one cant fight biology. We may treat her as female, accept her as female and refer to her as such but that doesnt change the fact taht she got screwed by biology and was born male and thus is technically a male Avana :)
Also not to be misunderstood, i pick on her because she was being a dick about the whole thing not for any other reason.
On a lighter note (and in the spirit of the pictars thread), i was on vacation for the last few days...wish i still was :(

I know... even I felt it hard to support the cause when she would slag me every time I talked like a "breeder" :(

Nah, I used to work as a multilingual secretary for companies such as this one... so I was talking about actual office work :p

I know the market is competitive and whatnot, my sole point is that if he really really wanted to get a job, he could find one that doesn't mind his transformation into a human sieve (and, if he can't, it's about time he bit the bullet and moved on).
